A unique division of Red Ventures, Lonely Planet, is looking for a talented, results-oriented, and innovative Engineering Manager to join our team. Responsible for managing engineering teams and guiding our teams as we scale and support them in continuously delivering business value. In this role, you will be a hands-on player and a coach. You'll need to possess the capability to push your team's abilities to grow them individually and as a unit while also remaining hands-on in developing our applications and tools. Your primary focus is your team and the people in it. We expect you to build a great culture with diversity, inclusion, bias to action, and openness as our core values for the various Travel-related products within the vertical.

In addition to building applications that can hold up to our business's scale & growth, our team of engineers works collaboratively with the business leaders to develop innovative solutions to grow the business. We love to build high-quality software and believe that there is real value in developing software to be easily understood, maintained, and extended. We are all about teamwork, accountability, innovation, and a customer-first approach. We work hard but do so in a collaborative, fun, and flexible work environment.

As a team member, you will have the opportunity to work on mission-critical projects directly impacting our business's evolution. You will be able to apply your programming skills towards building high throughput transactional services and highly performant web experiences. We always explore new technologies and engineer better solutions for demanding business needs.

Engineering Managers are Red Venture's first-level technology leaders. They generally have 4-10 direct reports who are individual contributors, and may manage between 1 and 3 sprint teams. EM’s should have a background as senior developers and be capable of jumping into code or infrastructure, but their primary responsibility is to manage, motivate, and equip their teams. This role is fast-paced, it’s not the same every day, and it quickly sharpens your practical leadership skills.

What you’ll do

  • Plan and execute the delivery of software projects with one or more sprint teams. Deliver high quality software while keeping morale high.
  • Hold 1:1 meetings with your team members. Give and receive feedback and help them build toward fulfilling career trajectories.
  • Develop your team’s technical talent: identify skill gaps, furnish resources and mentorship. Build and maintain high standards of professionalism on the team. Carry the torch on technical concerns that are less visible for business stakeholders: simplification, standardization, testing, monitoring and alerting, deployments, outage management, and continuous improvement.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that the team’s technical implementations align with business goals. Understand and share the difference between what’s essential and what’s arbitrary, and be ready to draw a straight line from team priorities to code-level details.
  • Partner with other engineering managers to create cross-team bridges, avoid duplicate work, and nail down details of cross-team integrations.
  • Act as the primary liaison between your sprint team and your brand’s business team. Align on goals and timelines, scope projects, communicate about progress and delegation of work, identify and help to prioritize remediation of technical debt.

What we’re looking for:

  • 5+ years of experience as an engineering leader.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as an Engineering Manager, overseeing globally dispersed engineering teams in dynamic settings
  • A verifiable history of successfully deploying intricate B2B or B2C applications, preferably having taken greenfield apps from inception to initial release
  • Expert-level familiarity with at least one software engineering discipline. Background as a senior developer. Could be devops, backend, QA automation, front end, mobile, or data engineering.
  • Cross- platform frameworks application, preferably on React native or Flutter.
  • General familiarity with a broader range of technologies and technical topics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. You should be able to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences. Should be able to compose brief, to-the-point emails and longform technical documentation.
  • Experience leading software teams.
  • A competitive instinct to break logjams, cut through red tape, and help your team succeed.
  • A passion for people.

Even Better:

  • AWS Solutions Architect certification, or similar cloud certifications to demonstrate an understanding of scaled-up distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with data engineering, data science, machine learning, and/or developing LLM (Language Model) products
  • Experience managing engineers whose function is outside your core expertise. (e.g., you’re a front end engineer overseeing devops.)
  • Varied experience with agile practices. Strong opinions about team SDLC.
  • Experience leading/working on more than one sprint team at a time.
  • Experience working in the consumer internet space.

Compensation

  • USA Compensation Range: $130,000 - 190,000
    • New York City Compensation Range: $130,000 - 210,000
*Note actual salary is based on geographic location, qualifications, and experience.
