Job Description

The team you will join: Wise Assistant

We're building Wise Assistant, a conversational AI that will become a central interface for managing money on Wise. This is a super visible and highly ambitious AI project

The team is at the forefront of applied AI at Wise. We already automate 40% of customer support chats with LLMs, and we're pushing further: voice automation, agentic AI and becoming the conversational operating system at Wise. Part product, part R&D, always production-grade at scale.

This role is a rare opportunity:

• Production AI at scale: Not a PoC, not an experiment. Real LLM systems serving millions of customers, with real stakes.

• R&D with impact. You'll read papers, prototype new approaches, and ship them to production. The team is pushing the frontier of what's possible with AI in fintech.

• In Budapest. One of very few opportunities to lead large-scale AI engineering locally.

You will:

• Lead a small, senior engineering team building production LLM systems

• Shape the technical vision for AI at Wise: architecture, evaluation, and how we integrate the latest research into production

• Partner closely with embedded Data Science, PM, Analyst and Prompt Engineering functions

• Stay close to the latest tech (expect hands-on work on system design and architecture)

• Be a thought leader on AI engineering at Wise

Qualifications

You bring:

• 2+ years leading engineering teams, ideally including senior engineers

• Strong, hands-on technical experience in OOP Languages (Java) and modern technology stacks on technologies such as REST APIs, microservices, distributed systems and CI/CD pipelines - you will have to complete technical interviews to showcase your knowledge.

• Solid understanding of LLM engineering: RAG architectures, vector databases & embeddings, prompt/context engineering, orchestration patterns, tool use, evaluation methods and guardrails/safety approaches.

• Passion for AI: you follow the space, and want to push boundaries on a production system at scale

• Excellent collaboration skills across functions and teams

• Bonus: TypeScript, deeper AI fundamental (eg. transformer architectures, fine tuning, etc).
