Staff Database Engineer

Our current stack spans cloud and physical data centers with primarily Ruby and Java applications running Kubernetes against 100s of TB of zero-downtime OLTP PostgreSQL clusters, Kafka pipelines, CDC fed into a data lake (including Airflow, Spark, and Athena), and more. 

We are looking for a senior database engineer to join Braintree’s Data Engineering team. The Data engineering team is responsible for defining and executing data strategy including how data is stored, accessed, transformed and managed across Braintree. As a senior database engineer on this team, you will have a role in the design and implementation of both database architecture as well as application data access. You will work very closely with our database infrastructure team to design and implement new solutions to serve high-volume use cases. You are expected to have a deep understanding of building and scaling distributed systems. You are expected to collaborate with multiple stakeholders including application teams, DBA team, SRE and enterprise architecture team to perform large scale transformations to existing applications. These integrations span across multiple PayPal subsidiaries creating unique and complex technical challenges and exciting opportunities to learn and grow. 

What You’ll Do: 

• Anchor major team workstreams to build and improve large-scale database architecture (PostgreSQL), reduce complexity, increase automation and burn down technical debt. 

• Build key components of our database platform via pair programming with other engineers. 

• Help choose the right technologies and keep pushing the architecture forward 

• Setup practices to ensure the highest levels of operational resiliency. 

• Design, implement, and maintain data pipelines handling massive transactional volumes. 

• Contribute to a culture of learning and growth. 

• Hold an extremely high bar on operational resiliency. 

• Support production systems 24/7 (on a rotation basis) 

What We're Looking For  

• 8+ years of experience in databases engineering and/or software engineering with a focus on OLTP databases. 

• 5+ years of experience managing Highly available OLTP databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, etc.) 

• Design and operational experience with large scale production grade systems. 

• Deep expertise both in writing and optimizing performance of SQL and PL/SQL. 

• Proficiency in one or more of the following: Java, Ruby, Python, Golang, or shell scripting.  

• Reasonable experience in Linux and understanding of operating systems. 

• Some experience building and maintaining large distributed systems on one of the major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP) 

• Ability to work in a fast paced, agile development environment. 

• Ability to partner with business units, product management, program management and cross-functional teams to deliver business results with agility and high quality. 

• Excellent time management skills and ability to work on concurrent assignments with different priorities. 

• Proven results-oriented engineer with a focus on the customer and delivering quality products. 

Nice To Have

• Experience with infrastructure as code tooling such as Terraform & CloudFormation. 

• Deep understanding of AWS and GCP technologies. 

• Experience with Ruby on Rails 

• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes. 

• Experience in workflow engines / schedulers like Airflow, Argo, Control-M, UC4. 

• Experience with monitoring/logging tools and best practices. 

• Test-driven development (TDD).
