Role Overview

The Commerce team is responsible for building next-generation cloud commerce systems that power pricing, billing, usage metering, and revenue generation for Coupang’s cloud platform. This team operates as the backbone of the cloud business, enabling accurate pricing, discounting, invoicing, and real-time usage visibility for customers.

The systems are highly scalable and event-driven, ingesting and processing massive volumes of data—including customer usage events and Kubernetes-driven infrastructure signals. As the platform scales from early-stage adoption to large-scale rollout, it is expected to handle exponentially growing workloads, potentially reaching hundreds of millions to billions of events, while maintaining high performance and reliability.

A key focus of this team is building financial-grade systems that ensure accuracy, consistency, and correctness in billing, pricing, and revenue computation. These systems must provide real-time insights to customers while guaranteeing precise accounting of usage and charges.

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will act as a technical leader, translating complex business requirements into scalable architecture and distributed systems. You will design and build low-latency, high-throughput backend services that can support multi-tenant cloud environments, ensure reliability under rapid growth, and maintain strict correctness in revenue-critical workflows.

What You Will Do

• Design and build scalable backend systems for pricing, billing, and usage metering
• Develop event-driven architectures to process large volumes of real-time usage and infrastructure data
• Build systems that provide real-time visibility into customer usage and billing metrics
• Design components for rate cards, pricing plans, discounting, and multi-currency transactions
• Work on distributed systems that support exponential growth in customers and usage events
• Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and platform teams to build cloud-native commerce capabilities
• Ensure high levels of accuracy, reliability, and scalability in revenue-critical systems
• Contribute to architecture decisions and drive engineering best practices

Basic Qualifications

• 8+ years of backend engineering experience 
• Strong proficiency in Java-based backend development
• Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
• Experience building event-driven architectures and distributed systems
• Experience designing and scaling high-throughput systems handling large volumes of events
• Experience working with AWS-managed databases (e.g., Aurora or similar OLTP systems)
• Familiarity with containerized systems and Kubernetes ecosystems
• Experience building real-time systems (e.g., usage tracking, billing, metering pipelines)
• Strong understanding of system design, scalability, and reliability principles
• Strong problem-solving skills with focus on efficiency and correctness
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Golang for backend development
• Deep expertise in AWS ecosystem (compute, storage, distributed services)
• Experience designing large-scale event processing systems (hundreds of millions to billions of events)
• Experience building cloud commerce platforms, billing systems, or pricing engines
• Familiarity with real-time usage metering, invoicing, or revenue systems
• Experience working with Kubernetes-based observability signals (logs, infra events, metrics)
• Exposure to high-growth systems scaling from early stage to large production scale
• Experience building multi-tenant, customer-facing cloud platforms

Type of work model

• Hybrid / Onsite / Remote working
• Our Hybrid work model: Coupang hybrid work model is designed to enable a culture of collaboration that acts a catalyst to enrich the experience of employees. Employees are required to work at least 3 days in the office per week, with the flexibility to work from home 2 days a week, depending on the role requirement. Some businesses may require more time in office due to nature of work.
