As a Machine Learning Engineer on the Spruce Data Science team, you’ll be partnering with a highly skilled group of data engineers and software developers working together toward a bold and high-reaching goal. Our team is focused on developing comprehensive applications and data-driven solutions that streamline the closing process. Our services offer valuable insights to empower buyers, sellers, agents and closers. Leveraging machine learning tools like Large Language Models, we aim to optimize communication and efficiency in the closing and escrow process for a seamless and efficient experience.

About the role

The Spruce Data Science and Automation Team is looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to help us advance Zillow’s mission by developing outstanding and engaging user experiences with AI.

As a Machine Learning Engineer (MLE), you will work closely with other MLEs and software developers to deliver the systems that power these experiences. You will be encouraged to keep up with the latest CV/ML frameworks and best modeling and coding practices. In this role, you'll:

  • Design, implement, and document technical solutions (API services) that are scalable, performant, maintainable, and secure.

  • Promote operational efficiency by establishing benchmarks in software design, implementing automated testing, and observability mechanisms.

  • Partner with scientists to Leverage LLMs and ML frameworks to build modeling and prediction services that support our closing technology platform

  • Collaborate with team members from diverse domains: operations, product, data, and science

  • Work hands-on in technical feature development, design and code-reviews, and prototyping.

  • Assist in creating research and development projects that are aimed at advancing Spruce’s long term goals by leveraging AI technologies

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $140,100.00 - $223,900.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

As a Machine Learning Engineer, you are a roll-up-the-sleeves and get it done practitioner in computer vision and machine learning. This is a new, fast-growing space, and we are looking for someone who has:

  • 2+ Years experience as a professional Machine Learning Engineer

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated skill in designing, developing and deploying models in large production environments.

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, or related domain or equivalent industry experience

  • Expertise in machine learning research, building models, and algorithms

  • Proficiency (academic is acceptable) with a high-level programming language (Python/Java)

  • Experience building data pipelines, exploration and visualization tools.

  • Experience in developing services, databases and interfaces exposing ML to endpoints.

  • Experience training machine learning models in frameworks like Tensorflow, PyTorch, CatBoost

  • Experience optimizing and deploying models

  • The communication skills to work collaboratively to prototype, develop, and implement new technologies

  • The tenacity to embrace and solve challenging problems!

  • Comfortable in a small team/fast-paced environment

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills

Nice to have:

  • Experience building and deploying applications using Google Cloud Platform or other cloud-based technologies

  • Experience with building applications using Generative AI or Large Language Models and related technologies
