Associate Product Manager - Revenue Accounting

Location: Bengaluru, India

Department: Finance

Experience: 3 - 5 years

About the role

At Zenskar, Revenue accounting is an area which demands extensive research and carefully thought out product decisions to set our product up to handle real world complexity and edge cases.
In this role, you will own accounting and revenue recognition areas end to end to shape what we build, in what order, how well it solves the problem for our customers. This demands deep expertise into the Revenue & AR accounting landscape and insights into the nitty gritties of day-to-day accounting operations & ERPs that will help you empathise with our accounting users, anticipate their pain points & build state-of-the-art solutions that solve their problems.

What you'll do

  • Own a revenue accounting area end to end: decide what we build, in what order, and explicitly define what you are not building and why.
  • Understand the revenue accounting landscape and anticipate and plan for diverse use cases and be an authority on accounting treatment as per ASC 606 / IFRS 15.
  • Work closely with our accounting users to understand their workflows and requirements and translate that context to delightful product experiences that create the right numbers that can pass audits.
  • Write PRDs with clear scope and requirements that engineering can build from without ambiguity
  • Partner with engineering on trade-offs, and scoping decisions to ensure we build for the future while protecting our release timelines.
  • Work out where AI belongs in revenue accounting flows and make trade-off decisions about what needs AI, deterministic tools & human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • Own the accounting documentation, so a customer can configure their own revenue treatment without asking us
  • Give GTM teams the accounting substance to hold a real conversation with a finance buyer, and keep them current as the roadmap moves
  • Support sales and customer success on accounting escalations, be the senior accountant as well as product expert in the room to triage & solve problems fast.
  • Build enough working knowledge of the system, its APIs, data model, and integrations, to know the engineering consequences of your scoping and feature decisions
  • Stay current on accounting guidance as well as practical applications that impact our roadmap

Who you are

  • A qualification in accounting: CA, CPA, ACCA, CMA, or an accounting degree with equivalent depth
  • 3 to 5 years experience in accounting or related roles, ideally applying US GAAP or IFRS principles to business cases in a revenue function or in audit, advisory, or assurance at an accounting firm
  • You can translate accounting guidance and judgements into product decisions that deliver delightful experiences to our users.
  • Can take a messy fact pattern and identify patterns and shapes to arrive at scoping and product roadmap decisions
  • You use AI tools in your own work and have a view on where they help with accounting and where they get it wrong.
  • You are comfortable with technical concepts & willing to learn what you need to have fruitful discussions with Engineering
  • Can decompose an ambiguous problem, find the smallest real version of it and be explicit in your decisions
  • You want to transition into a product role where you can use your domain expertise to create impact.

You should not apply if

  • You need a fully defined problem before you can start working
  • You find edge cases annoying rather than interesting
  • You find it difficult to handle blurry role boundaries between accounting and products

Good to have

  • Product experience of any kind: a side project, an internal tool you specced, a migration you ran
  • Hands-on with a billing, revenue, or ERP system: NetSuite, Zuora, SAP, Sage Intacct, Chargebee, Maxio, or similar
  • Experience in SaaS or usage-based businesses with complex contracts
  • Knowledge of SaaS business models and compliance frameworks
  • SQL, or complex spreadsheet work
  • Prior experience at a startup
  • Not taking yourself too seriously :)
