Role Overview

We're looking for a hands-on Tech Lead to shape the architecture and technical direction of our Commerce platform, powering product recommendations, search, merchandising, and the data platform behind them.
This is a highly technical leadership role where you'll balance architectural thinking with hands-on engineering (approximately 30–50% coding).

You'll lead the design of scalable distributed systems, mentor engineers, establish engineering standards, and work closely with Product and Engineering leadership to build a platform capable of serving large-scale commerce workloads.

You'll partner closely with the Engineering Manager on execution while providing technical leadership across backend services, search infrastructure, and data engineering.

About the Commerce Team

The Commerce (Recommendations & Merchandising) team builds the intelligence layer powering modern e-commerce experiences.
Our platform enables personalized recommendations, merchandising automation, intelligent search, and large-scale data processing that directly influence how users discover and purchase products.

You'll help evolve this platform while solving challenging problems in distributed systems, search, scalability, and data engineering.


What You'll Do

  • Define the technical vision and architecture for the Commerce platform across APIs, search, recommendation systems, and data infrastructure.
  • Design highly scalable, reliable, and performant distributed systems.
  • Lead architecture discussions, design reviews, and code reviews across the engineering team.
  • Establish engineering best practices for system design, testing, CI/CD, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Break complex initiatives into executable technical roadmaps while proactively managing technical risks and debt.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
  • Partner with Product Managers and the Engineering Manager to make pragmatic technical trade-offs and execute the product roadmap.
  • Stay close to the code by building critical components, prototyping new ideas, and leading production incident resolution when required.


What We're Looking For

Required

  • 6–8 years of software engineering experience with a strong track record of designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
  • Proven experience leading technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction.
  • Strong expertise in Python or Go, with working knowledge of the other language.
  • Deep understanding of API design using REST and/or GraphQL.
  • Strong foundation in distributed systems, system design, scalability, and performance optimization.
  • Experience working with analytical databases such as ClickHouse, BigQuery, Snowflake, or Redshift.
  • Experience with modern search technologies such as Meilisearch, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Solr, or Vespa.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure), Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD, and observability tooling.
  • Familiarity with modern data engineering practices using Airflow, dbt, Dataform, or equivalent technologies.
  • Excellent communication, mentoring, and technical leadership skills.


Nice to Have

  • Experience with recommendation engines, search relevance, ranking systems, or ML-powered products.
  • Exposure to frontend technologies such as React and TypeScript.
  • Experience building multi-tenant SaaS platforms.
  • Led platform modernization or monolith-to-microservices migrations.
  • Experience in e-commerce, personalization, martech, or customer data platforms.

Education

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
Equivalent professional experience is equally valued.
