About the Role:

The Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software solutions that power Wiley Science Solutions' online products, digital platforms, and scientific information services. This role contributes to the delivery of scalable web applications, SaaS offerings, APIs, and cloud-based platforms that serve researchers, scientists, and enterprise customers worldwide.
 

Working within an Agile, cross-functional environment, the Software Engineer collaborates with Product Managers, Architects, UX Designers, QA Engineers, DevOps Engineers, and fellow developers to build reliable, secure, and user-centric solutions. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality software while continuously improving product capabilities, performance, scalability, and customer experience.
 

How You Will Make an Impact

Software Development & Delivery

  • Develop new features and enhancements for Wiley Science Solutions' online products, including customer-facing web applications, SaaS platforms, and scientific information services.
  • Design, build, and maintain modern, scalable, and secure software solutions using industry-standard frameworks, cloud technologies, and engineering best practices.
  • Deliver high-quality code that supports business objectives and creates meaningful value for customers.
     

Technical Implementation

  • Build and maintain full-stack applications and backend services using object-oriented design principles, software design patterns, and modern programming languages.
  • Develop and integrate RESTful APIs, microservices, cloud-native services, and data platforms that support scalable and resilient digital products.
  • Contribute to modernization initiatives by improving existing architectures, optimizing performance, and reducing technical debt.
     

Quality, Reliability & Engineering Excellence

  • Follow engineering best practices including automated testing, peer code reviews, continuous integration, and secure software development standards.
  • Support application reliability, scalability, security, and maintainability through robust testing, monitoring, and troubleshooting practices.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and resolution of production issues to ensure a stable customer experience.
     

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Product Managers, UX Designers, Architects, QA Engineers, DevOps Engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver business value.
  • Participate in technical discussions, solution design sessions, and implementation planning activities.
  • Work effectively within distributed global teams, balancing independent ownership with collaborative delivery.
     

Agile Participation & Continuous Improvement

  • Actively contribute to Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Provide accurate estimates and communicate risks, dependencies, and technical challenges proactively.
  • Support initiatives that improve team effectiveness, engineering excellence, and delivery predictability.
     

Innovation & Growth

  • Continuously expand technical expertise and stay current with emerging technologies, cloud platforms, AI-enabled capabilities, and modern software development practices.
  • Apply software architecture and system design principles to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Contribute ideas that improve products, platforms, customer experiences, and engineering efficiency.
     

Customer & Business Impact

  • Develop software solutions that enable researchers, scientists, and enterprise customers to efficiently access, analyze, and manage scientific information.
  • Help advance Wiley Science Solutions' strategic objectives by improving product usability, scalability, performance, and customer value.
  • Foster strong communication and collaboration across engineering and product teams to support business success.
     

What We Look For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience developing, testing, and maintaining modern software applications.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming principles and software design patterns.
  • Experience building web applications, backend services, APIs, or distributed systems.
  • Knowledge of software development best practices including code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD processes.
  • Experience working within Agile software development environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate within cross-functional and distributed teams.
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with modern web technologies including React, Next.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Experience with backend development technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and Microservices.
  • Experience with cloud platforms and services, including AWS.
  • Experience with containers and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native application development and scalable SaaS platforms.
  • Interest in AI-enabled technologies and modern software engineering innovations.
