About the Role:

We're looking for a Quality Engineer who codes. Not someone who writes click-through scripts, but an engineer who reads the source, understands how the system works, and builds automation that catches real problems before they ship. You'll join a distributed, hands-on team that debates openly, then commits, and you'll own quality across the full stack.
 

What you'll do

• Build and maintain automated test suites in JavaScript from end-to-end browser tests through API and integration coverage.
• Write real code: reusable test frameworks, utilities, and helpers, not throwaway scripts.
• Do white-box (structural) testing. Read the code, understand the internals, and target tests where the risk actually is.
• Test across the stack: React front ends, Node.js services, and PostgreSQL data.
• Write and debug SQL to validate data, reproduce issues, and check system state directly.
• Automate browser flows with Selenium and keep the suite fast, stable, and trustworthy.
• Wire tests into our CI pipelines so quality checks run on every change.
• Partner with engineers on design and code reviews, catching testability and quality gaps early.
• Investigate failures, isolate root cause, and file precise, reproducible reports.
• Help shape our test strategy, coverage, and quality gates.
   

What we're looking for

• 2+ years building automated tests for web applications.
• Strong JavaScript and TypeScript. You write clean, maintainable code, not just test scripts.
• Hands-on Selenium experience for browser automation.
• Solid working knowledge of React and Node.js, enough to test them from the inside.
• Comfortable with PostgreSQL and writing SQL for validation and debugging.
• A white-box mindset: you design tests around how the system actually works, not just what the UI shows.
• Strong problem-solving and debugging instincts.
• A clear communicator who works well in a distributed team.
   

Nice to have

• API testing experience with REST or GraphQL.
• CI/CD experience (for example, GitHub Actions).
• Performance or load testing.
• Experience with event-driven systems (Kafka) or containers (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with modern JavaScript test tooling such as Jest, Playwright, or Cypress.
• Domain experience in academic or scholarly publishing.
