Senior Network Automation Engineer

At Wayfair, our Global Network Services (GNS) team is at the forefront of modernizing and automating network infrastructure to support our rapidly scaling global operations. We leverage Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native networking to ensure a secure, high-performing, and cost-efficient network environment.

As a Senior Network Automation Engineer, you will play a critical role in transforming how Wayfair designs, deploys, and manages its global network by driving automation, optimizing cloud and on-prem connectivity, and implementing scalable, resilient network architectures. This role requires deep technical expertise, a strong automation mindset, and the ability to collaborate across infrastructure, security, and cloud engineering teams.

What You'll Do

1. Network Automation & Infrastructure as Code (IaC)

• Design, develop, and maintain network automation solutions using Terraform and other IaC tools.
• Automate the provisioning and configuration of network devices, cloud networking components (GCP, Azure), and on-premise infrastructure.
• Ensure version-controlled infrastructure with Git, maintaining reproducibility and auditability.
• Build modular, reusable, and scalable Terraform modules for efficient deployment and management.

2. CI/CD Pipeline Integration for Network Deployments

• Develop and implement CI/CD pipelines for network automation using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, or Ansible Tower.
• Automate testing, validation, and deployment of network changes across environments.
• Ensure network changes are staged and tested before production rollouts to minimize risk and downtime.
• Collaborate with DevOps and Cloud Engineering teams to align network automation with overall infrastructure automation strategies.

3. Configuration Management & Compliance

• Implement configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible) for automating and enforcing network configurations.
• Ensure policy-driven network configurations to maintain security, compliance, and consistency across the global network.
• Automate configuration backups, validation, and drift detection for improved reliability and troubleshooting.

4. Network Architecture & Design

• Design and automate hybrid and multi-cloud network architectures, including VPCs, VNets, Transit Gateways, and SD-WAN solutions.
• Implement Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) and secure interconnectivity between on-prem and cloud networks.
• Support high-availability and fault-tolerant designs that scale with Wayfair’s global operations.

5. Process Automation & Optimization

• Identify and automate repetitive network tasks, including provisioning, monitoring, and remediation.
• Develop self-service network automation workflows to empower teams with on-demand network management capabilities.
• Use API-driven automation to integrate with monitoring and security platforms for proactive network management.
• Improve operational efficiency by reducing manual intervention through scripting (Python, Go, PowerShell).

6. Monitoring, Logging, & Troubleshooting

• Integrate network automation with observability platforms like Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or Datadog.
• Automate network telemetry collection, alerting, and log analysis to improve troubleshooting efficiency.
• Proactively detect and mitigate network anomalies using automation-driven insights.

7. Collaboration, Documentation & Mentorship

• Work closely with Network Engineers, Cloud Architects, Security teams, and DevOps to ensure seamless automation adoption.
• Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for network automation workflows, Terraform modules, and CI/CD processes.
• Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
• Participate in cross-functional initiatives, helping Wayfair advance its digital transformation and infrastructure modernization goals.

What You'll Need

• 5+ years of experience in network engineering and automation, with a strong focus on Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
• Expertise in Terraform, Ansible, Python, and CI/CD tools for automating network infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience with cloud networking (AWS, Azure, GCP) and on-prem networking (Cisco, Palo Alto, Juniper).
• Strong understanding of routing, switching, VPNs, firewalls, and SD-WAN technologies.
• Experience integrating network automation with monitoring/logging platforms for proactive issue detection.
• Knowledge of Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), cloud interconnects, and security best practices.
• Experience working in Git-based version control environments and collaborating with DevOps teams.
• Problem-solving mindset with a strong ability to troubleshoot complex network issues.
• Certifications such as CCNP, Cloud Certified Advanced Networking, Terraform Associate, or equivalent are a plus.
