Taonga: the Island Farm is an exploration and adventure game set across a colourful tropical archipelago. What begins as casual farming develops into a rich midcore experience combining travel, story-driven quests, battles, mini-games and competitive events.

Launched in 2016, Taonga is now a mature live product with complex infrastructure supporting regular updates and future growth.

About the role

Our engineers work across the entire technology stack, from service development to infrastructure management. We are looking for an experienced Platform & Reliability Engineer with a deep architectural understanding of Kubernetes, beyond simply running helm install.

You will design infrastructure independently, select hardware, build bare-metal clusters from scratch and take end-to-end ownership of their reliability. We value a strong understanding of the scheduler, networking and control plane, the distinction between controllers and operators, and experience exploring Kubernetes source code or building custom controllers.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain bare-metal Kubernetes clusters as part of our strategic move away from GCP.

• Plan and carry out the migration of services from GCP to self-hosted infrastructure.

• Take ownership of day-to-day Kubernetes operations, including deployments, troubleshooting and cluster upgrades.

• Maintain and improve our observability stack, including Prometheus, Grafana and Loki.

• Optimise GitOps and CI/CD pipelines and automate routine infrastructure processes.

Our ideal candidate

• A genuine passion for games.

• 2+ years' hands-on experience running Kubernetes in production, including deploying clusters from scratch with kubeadm or k3s, troubleshooting, and managing networking and storage.

• Experience with Prometheus and Grafana.

• Hands-on experience with GitOps practices and tools such as Argo CD or Flux.

• Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform or Pulumi.

• Strong Linux systems administration skills.

• A solid understanding of networking, including TCP/IP, DNS and load balancing.

• Programming experience with Python, Go or TypeScript, and a willingness to use TypeScript for infrastructure as code and automation.

• The ability to work independently, make sound technical decisions and take ownership of systems from end to end.

• A broad engineering mindset and a willingness to work across different languages, tools and areas of infrastructure.
