Software Engineer, Cyber Collection

In today's digital landscape, OSINT (open-source intelligence) tools have become indispensable for understanding global dynamics and informing critical decisions. The Ukraine-Russia conflict has demonstrated the power of OSINT in providing real-time insights into military movements, disinformation campaigns, and humanitarian crises, often outpacing traditional intelligence gathering methods. Similarly, as global competition with China intensifies, OSINT collection offers valuable perspectives on technological advancements, economic strategies, and geopolitical maneuvers. In the Middle East, where regional tensions and rapid sociopolitical changes are constant, OSINT plays a crucial role in monitoring extremist activities. The ability to efficiently collect, process, and analyze this vast sea of open-source data has become a cornerstone of modern intelligence. 

About the role 

We're looking for a talented Software Engineer to build our cyber collection platform, specializing in data collection and processing to support cyber-focused OSINT workflows in the US DoD. You will creatively engineer solutions to access hard-target data, structuring messy data streams into valuable information that partner teams can use to build custom DoD workflows with our customers. On this team you will support greenfield collection efforts that play a crucial role in powering new product initiatives at Vannevar Labs. 

What you’ll do 

• Build reliable and scalable backend systems that collect, process, and store key cyber intelligence data
• Innovate new approaches to accessing open-source intelligence that solves key mission problems for our customers
• Process and structure data such that it can be efficiently exploited by partner teams building front-end applications
• Collaborate across interdisciplinary teams, including Cyber security experts, to plan, build, and deliver complex software features
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to peers 

Who you are

• Deep understanding of how the internet works, operational security, cybersecurity fundamentals, and managed attribution
• Experience building ETL workflows with large-scale messy data
• Strong ethics for handling of sensitive data and adherence to data privacy rules and compliance standards
• Proficiency coding with Python, or similar
• Proficiency with PostgreSQL, or other relational databases.
• Proficiency with software development in AWS or other cloud services.
• Availability for up to 15% travel time
• Excellent communication, teamwork skills, and project ownership
• U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access U.S. only data systems 

Nice to haves

• Familiarity with Temporal.io or similar technologies
• Experience scraping data or a strong desire to learn
• Experience working in an engineering organization and performing a cybersecurity role
• Experience with shell scripting
