IT Business Intelligence Developer

Location: San Francisco, CA, United States

Certain terms and conditions of employment for this position, including the rate of pay, benefits, etc., are currently subject to negotiation with the appropriate union.

The Business Intelligence Developer (BID) serves as an expert in clinical informatics, Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR) reporting, and enterprise data visualization tools. The BID applies deep knowledge of Epic applications and demonstrates exceptional skill in partnering with reporting and analytics stakeholders to understand, design, and document complex data needs. This role coordinates all issues that arise during reporting and analytics initiatives and frequently addresses problems without precedent or existing structure across UCSF Health, Benioff Children’s Hospitals, and affiliated organizations.

The BID performs advanced data analysis using independent judgment and technical expertise to support outstanding patient care, operational performance, quality improvement, and strategic decision‑making. Core responsibilities include developing and optimizing EHR reporting, data analysis, and visualization solutions across multiple systems—Epic reporting tools, SQL, Tableau, and related platforms. This position also participates in clinical systems application teams to evaluate data, gather stakeholder feedback, and leverage analytics to support hospital, clinic, staff, program, and operational performance.

This role includes dedicated responsibility to support Beaker analytic reporting for UCSF Health and affiliates, ensuring high‑quality laboratory analytics, operational insights, and clinical reporting across the enterprise.

Attention to detail and strong communication skills are essential. The BID helps users adopt development standards, improve reporting practices, and enhance data visualization capabilities. The role requires expert knowledge of Epic applications and reporting tools—including Reporting Workbench, Radar, SlicerDicer, SQL Server, and Tableau—as well as advanced analytical abilities in data extraction, report generation, and information visualization. The BID may also develop training materials and educate end users on reporting tools and functions.

At UCSF, collaboration and innovation are central to our mission across hospitals, clinics, classrooms, labs, and administrative environments. To advance excellence in patient care, research, and education, we are strengthening our on‑site presence across the university. As part of this commitment, most IT teams support campus‑based work. This role will be expected to work onsite on a rotational or alternative schedule as determined by the hiring manager, and may be required to attend onsite events as scheduled by management.
