Team Overview

The UK Decision Services team delivers software solutions that help banks, building societies, retailers, and other financial services organisations assess credit risk and make informed lending decisions.

Using data from credit reference agencies and other sources, the team designs, configures, tests, and supports decisioning solutions that enable clients to deliver fast, compliant, and accurate outcomes for their customers.

This role reports to the Manager, Technical Consultant.

Role Overview And Core Responsibilities

This is a junior programming-focused role for someone who enjoys solving problems, working with data, and applying code to practical business requirements. You do not need previous experience with decisioning software, but you must be able to demonstrate how you have used Python and Lua through education, coursework, bootcamps, placements, apprenticeships, personal projects, or employment. You will receive support to develop your knowledge of decisioning technology, credit risk, testing, and client solution delivery.

  • Support the development, configuration, testing, and delivery of decisioning software solutions for financial services clients.
  • Apply programming and logical thinking to translate business requirements and solution designs into clear rules, workflows, and software configurations.
  • Use credit bureau and client data to support credit risk and lending solutions.
  • Complete testing and data validation checks to confirm that solutions are configured correctly and perform as expected.
  • Help investigate software issues and defects, identify possible causes, and work with colleagues to resolve them.
  • Create and maintain clear business, functional, and technical documentation.
  • Work with technical colleagues, project teams, clients, and third-party partners to support project delivery.
  • Provide progress updates, ask questions, and contribute ideas throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support solution implementation, change requests, issue resolution, and post-production activities.

Required Knowledge And Experiences

We are looking for potential and a strong programming foundation rather than extensive professional experience. Your experience may come from education, coursework, a placement, apprenticeship, bootcamp, personal projects, volunteering, or employment, but you should be ready to explain and demonstrate how you have applied your technical skills.

  • An interest in technology, data, software configuration, and solving business problems.
  • Examples of using logical thinking and programming to analyse a problem, investigate an issue, or develop a practical solution.
  • Ability to understand instructions or requirements and break them down into clear steps.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions and work collaboratively.
  • A degree, diploma, apprenticeship, bootcamp, or relevant coursework in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Data, Mathematics, Science, Business, or a related subject, or equivalent practical experience.
  • A willingness to learn decisioning technology, credit risk concepts, software testing, and client solution delivery.

Required Technical Skills

You do not need to be an expert. We are looking for a basic understanding and practical exposure gained through study, projects, placements, apprenticeships, or work in the following areas:

  • Practical programming or scripting experience in both Python and Lua. Candidates must be able to demonstrate how they have applied each language through coursework, projects, placements, apprenticeships, or employment.
  • Basic understanding of Structured Query Language (SQL), databases, spreadsheets, or another method used to query, interpret, and validate data.
  • Experience applying code, logical rules, conditions, workflows, or step-by-step processes to solve a technical problem.
  • Confidence using Microsoft Excel and Word to review information and produce clear documentation.

We're also looking for the preferred skills below. Whether you are proficient or could use some brushing up, we're happy to support your career development and growth in:

  • Exposure to software testing, test cases, data validation, or defect investigation.
  • Experience with APIs, data structures, system configuration, or rules-based and workflow-driven software.
  • Awareness of financial services, lending, credit risk, or automated decision-making.
  • Experience working on a group technical project or explaining technical information to others.
