Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a senior data analyst with proven experience in journalism or digital media to join the team dedicated to providing the newsroom with meaningful trends and data-informed insights. Understanding audience behavior, interests, and shifts in media consumption and translating them into actionable strategies that can be implemented across The Post’s newsroom teams will be integral to our goal of expanding the reach and impact of our journalism.

As part of the News Analytics, Insights & Training team based in the newsroom, you will be responsible for parsing off-platform data from social media, newsletters, video and audio channels and establishing takeaways that editors and reporters can use to better understand the needs of audiences. Ideal candidates for this position will be deeply curious and have a passion for following the latest trends and experiments in the industry. They will also have proven experience creating replicable workflows to scale analysis and our team’s impact. They will be thoughtful about the large and small strategies that can be implemented to improve our audience’s experience of our journalism across a variety of channels while maintaining a deep commitment to our public service mission.

Responsibilities

  • Support key strategic analyses on off-platform audience behavior and trends for the newsroom

  • Design reports, dashboards and data workflows that support the daily analytics needs of video, audio, newsletter and social media editors

  • Answer ad hoc questions about how The Post’s journalism reaches and engages audiences off-platform

  • Partner with colleagues in the revenue, engineering and product teams to design data tools that scale to the needs of The Post’s newsroom

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in off-platform analytics, including working with native platform analytics (e.g., Meta Business Suite, YouTube Analytics, etc.) and analytics APIs

  • Proven experience designing and evaluating product and/or content experiments and a keen sense for data gaps and inconsistencies

  • Proven expertise and deep experience doing data analysis using Google Sheets or Excel

  • Skills in visualizing data, drawing conclusions, synthesizing insights and explaining results to a non-technical audience

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to develop narratives around findings and adjust delivery for different audiences

  • Ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision as well as in a collaborative team environment

  • Self-starter with the ability to work in a constantly changing environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience fetching and analyzing data using tools such as SQL, Python, R and/or analytics APIs

  • Experience developing reliable data pipelines

  • Experience working in a newsroom with a variety of stakeholders including editors, reporters, and newsroom leaders

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet all of the qualifications above. Candidates should upload a resume to our jobs portal and may include a cover letter to tell us about other skills and experience that you think would be valuable for this role. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by Mar. 14 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Lizzy Raben, News Analytics, Insights & Training Manager and Christina Macholan, Deputy Head of Audience.

The salary range for this position is: $82,600.00 - $136,000.00 USD. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.

As a student navigating the job market, I've found LinkedIn increasingly frustrating due to numerous fake postings by consultancies. In contrast, this job posting website has been a game-changer for me. It offers genuine opportunities and a straightforward application process, making it much easier to find and apply for real jobs. Highly recommend it to fellow students seeking reliable job listings!

Echo Jobs has been exceptional in my job hunt where it provides one platform to job hunt and I don't have to open 10 websites just to look for a job. It has also helped me focus much on the job skill and the location filtering out the onsite jobs and remote ones. The only feature that I would request is to display fully remote jobs that are not restricted to a country since the one available shows ie, Remote, US yet. But if it could show remote only, that would be helpful not only to me but to other people applying for full remote and not tied to only US candidates

I found EchoJobs in 2022, and I love it. It has a lot of remote jobs. It's exclusive to software and technology jobs (helpful for devs like me). What I like the most are its filters and its API. If you're a tech professional seeking remote work, I highly recommend giving it a try to EchoJobs.

Simply put, it's the most up to date tech jobs aggregator I’ve found. I'm like... "I don't have to check 10+ jobs boards daily just to see if there's a new job listing? sign me up!" The filters are also quite helpful! The UI is very clean and straightforward. Love it!
