Job Description

Join The New School

At The New School, we redefine the boundaries of education, creativity, and innovation. Founded in 1919 and located in the heart of New York City, we are home to approximately 9,000 students from over 100 countries, offering more than 135 degree and diploma programs across our renowned colleges, including Parsons School of Design and the College of Performing Arts (Mannes, Jazz, and Drama), Lang College and the New School for Social Research, and Parsons Paris. Our progressive, interdisciplinary approach has earned us recognition as one of the most forward-thinking institutions in the world.

The Higher Education Affordability Project at the Center for New York City Affairs is hiring a team of Federal Work Study students to assist our work in web design, social media development, and content creation. You will be part of a student team working for our award-winning website at Understandingfafsa.org. The website and email newsletter are focused on helping first-generation students and college access counselors understand and navigate our nation’s complicated and confusing financial aid process. We work closely with students and counselors to design, craft, and test materials with the goal of making college financial aid easy to understand. We are seeing FWS students with interest and experience in web and UX design, social media marketing and/or web content creation. This is an ideal position for a student with a passion for web design, publishing, and social media who is interested in helping families navigate the financial aid system and avoid too much college debt. Students will work as a team and report directly to the Director of CNYCA’s Higher Education Affordability Project.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with our professional design team on developing V6 of the website including a new section focused on our popular classroom materials for counselors and families.

  • Assist with the administration and publication of our weekly newsletter and updates on LinkedIn and Instagram.

  • Assist the team in developing content and curriculum for the website, including research and writing of short “how-to” blogs and tools for students, families, and educators.

  • Work with these audiences to develop new publications or products to make financial aid easier to understand and more accessible in high school and college.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in graphic design, web design, social media or content production.

  • Passion for learning new skills and working with a team to develop materials and games that help students to learn about college financing and financial planning.

  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines.

  • Full-time New School student with a Federal Work-Study award (If you don’t see this on your award letter, ask the financial aid office if you have a work-study award. Many students are unaware of this financial aid benefit.)

WORK MODE

Hybrid - This FWS position is for 10-15 hours per week with flexibility around the semester schedule. All work and meetings can be remote, though we hope to organize in-person team meetings occasionally. #LI-DNI

HOURLY RATE:

$21/hr

This is a Federal Work-Study position with the possibility of evolving into a New School Student Employment position if grant funding allows.
