Description

Hi, we're The Browser Company 👋 and we're building a better way to use the internet.

Browsers are unique in that they are one of the only pieces of software that you share with your parents as well as your kids. Which makes sense, they're our doorway to the most important things — through them we socialize with loved ones, work on our passion projects, and explore our curiosities. But on their own, they don’t actually do a whole lot, they’re kind of just there. They don’t help us organize our messy lives or make it easier to compose our ideas. We believe that the browser could do so much more — it can empower and support the amazing things we do on the internet. That’s why we’re building one: a browser that can help us grow, create, and stay curious.

To accomplish this lofty task, we’re building a diverse team of people from different backgrounds and experiences. This isn’t optional, it’s crucial to our mission, as we need a wide range of perspectives to challenge our assumptions and shape our browser through a bold, creative lens. With that in mind, we especially encourage women, people of color, and others from historically marginalized groups to apply.

About the Role

As an Engineering Manager on the Swift Toolchain team, you will be managing a highly driven and creative team of software engineers and technical leaders.

Our Swift Toolchain team works on Swift and LLVM, creating the tools that allows us to ship features to hundreds of thousands of Arc Members quickly and safely. Some of the current and upcoming projects our team is working on includes improving Swift on Windows and Android (see more on our Swift interoperability work here), and implementing new Swift features that are helpful for both The Browser Company and the Swift community at large. The Browser Company is making a huge bet on Swift and, in doing so, changing how browsers and cross-platform apps are built forever– but we’ll need your help to get there! You’ll foster collaboration on Swift across companies, helping shepherd changes through committees, and influence the overall Swift ecosystem.

Our Management Philosophy

Engineering Managers at Browser Company are hands-on technical leaders who build high-performing and psychologically-safe teams with a diverse group of individuals. You’ll work closely with your team to make product decisions, prioritize work, ship features, and promote an engineering culture of knowledge sharing and mentorship. You’ll lead work-streams across several projects while also jumping in to help solve technical problems or handle incidents. Engineering Managers follow the same onboarding pathway as an IC engineer and progressively take on more management responsibility as they ramp up.

Overall you will...

  • After initial onboarding, manage a team of 4 engineers, ensuring their growth, development, and team health.

  • Promote an engineering culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration.

  • Partner with engineers across various product teams to make decisions around technical strategy to power future product features.

  • Set goals and priorities that contribute directly to company level objectives.

  • Work closely with our developer experience team to ensure that product engineers can quickly build, debug, and ship features across iOS, macOS, Windows, and Android.

  • Ensure efficient product development cycles by treating developer velocity as a product, finding and fixing issues in the appropriate layer of the system.

  • Invest in observability, tooling, stability, processes and performance alongside building new systems.

  • Contribute to the LLVM and Swift project's health with the changes and work to improve that project for the larger community outside of the Browser Company.

  • Contribute to the broader engineering organization in terms of creating processes, recruiting, and onboarding.

Within 1 month you will...

  • Go through IC engineering onboarding - get to know the team and codebase with an onboarding buddy

  • Work side-by-side with other engineers on the team, fixing bugs and ship code improvements to production

  • Receive a number of onboarding presentations on how we give each other feedback, the phases a startup goes through, our technical strategy, workplace culture, and more

  • Get familiar with Chromium, Swift and our development environment across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.

  • Get familiar with our tooling, data pipelines and understanding the current state of performance and reliability.

  • Ship features to production with the guidance of other engineers

  • Get familiar with the pace and cadence at which we ship

Within 3 months you will...

  • Have engineers on the team reporting directly to you

  • Made contributions to our codebase

  • Be the point of contact for a work stream or initiative

  • Be involved in weekly engineering discussions about our architecture, how we do code review, code style, and more

  • Be regularly posting feedback about using Arc in our #dogfooding channel

  • Be mentoring and pair programming with newer engineers to help them get spun up on the codebase

Within 6 months you will...

  • Be leading execution for your team, ensuring the teams is in sync and shipping at a good pace

  • Be trained and interviewing candidates for roles at The Browser Company

  • Have collaborated with individuals on your team to make growth plans and goals.

  • Be mentoring engineers on your team and across the org on what rapid and efficient execution looks like

  • Be giving feedback to engineers and designers in your team on how they can improve their code quality, prototyping cadence, and time to ship

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of engineering experience with Swift, native application codebases, API design, compilers, programming language development, or improving the software development experience for engineers. Experience with a compiler or LLVM codebase or Swift source code is preferred but not required.

  • 3+ years of experience in people management, including hands on technical leadership.

  • Exposure to working on large scale open source projects as an external stakeholder (preferably, a major open source project like PHP, Hack, LLVM, Swift, WebKit, Chromium, Firefox) and a desire to continuously foster positive relationships with an open source developer community.

  • You're passionate about building tools and systems that make other engineers more productive and strive to make them elegant and maintainable.

  • You have a strong track record of coaching and mentoring senior engineers, helping them improve their skills and grow their careers.

  • You have expertise in tech leading critical projects and initiatives within your team and organization and know how to drive execution and productive pace.

  • You’re pragmatic, motivated by nebulous problems, and excited to work in a startup environment with quick product validation cycles.

  • Most of our team are based in North American time zones and require that folks have 4+ hours of overlap time with team members in Eastern Time Zone.

  • You resonate with our company values and can continue to scale your team with these in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We prioritize job seekers as our customers, unlike bigger job sites, by charging a small fee to provide them with curated access to the best companies and up-to-date jobs. This focus allows us to deliver a more personalized and effective job search experience.
  • Salaries for the engineering jobs on our site range from $100K-$200K. On average, senior engineer positions on our EchoJobs are about $160K.
  • The EchoJobs positions have been sourced and vetted from the top companies to work for in the US as a software engineer, including LinkedIn and other reputable job sites. We also have syndicated jobs from companies that have just raised funding, as well as those that have great unique products and culture. From all of these sources, our founder, Morgan, has also resourced the company's authenticity in terms of their website, public appearance, and more.
  • Yes, our users asked us for just this, so now our search filters allow you to search for your top jobs via location, as well as by onsite, remote, or both. Approximately 30% of our jobs are remote, so you’ve got the best options for you!
  • We have not yet implemented this option, but are considering doing so in the future. For the moment, you would need to cancel your subscription, and resubscribe when you wanted to come back.
  • We add new jobs to EchoJobs every day! We scan our sources for the newest jobs, verify them, and post them to EchoJobs within minutes. We add about 2,000-3,000 new jobs for you each day!
  • From starting your job search to getting hired, the entire job search process can take us software engineers anywhere between 3-6 months. However, at EchoJobs, we’re striving to shorten this duration by finding the best, newest jobs for you, so you can do less job searching, and more applying.
  • We’d recommend checking EchoJobs daily, as we add new jobs to the site each day. Additionally, if you got a chance to read our previous email on “what makes EchoJobs different from any other job search tools,” we also recommended that you set a job alert based on your job filters, so if you get emails on those new jobs, you could be checking more than once per day.
  • If you decide to continue with us after the 1-month trial, we definitely recommend this, as we all know it usually takes 3-6 months to find a quality job as a software engineer these days. So to best support you, we just adjusted our membership options at EchoJobs to monthly, 3 months, or 12 months (this option is more for passive job seekers looking a little bit for the future if they want to come back to work or make a job switch potentially. This lets you see what’s out there in case an even better fit job becomes available.)
  • EchoJobs is truly the only job site of its kind. We want to be THE spot for you to find the best job for you, and haven’t encountered any other company doing this. Other job sites are in niches besides software engineering or focus on a small portion of engineering jobs (like a specific coding language). In the words of Morgan, our founder, “I think what makes EchoJobs different is the amount of jobs, frequency that we add new jobs (we add 2,000-3,000 new jobs daily!), and the powerful search engines to find exactly the job you want more easily and efficiently. We can provide you with the most jobs that are vetted by us, we’ll continually find more new jobs for you, and we make it easier for you to apply and get hired.
