Join us developing the power system of the future with clean and sustainable energy! Tesla is looking for a Power Systems Intern to support Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing for solar + BESS at our Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) facility in Melbourne.
This internship provides hands-on experience with real-time simulation, controls validation, and system testing, helping to advance Tesla’s energy technology for grid integration and hybrid applications.
- Assist in setting up and automating HIL test environments to evaluate solar + BESS performance under different operating conditions.
- Support real-time simulations to validate grid interaction, dynamic behavior, and control strategies for hybrid energy systems.
- Conduct HIL-based testing to analyze system stability, transient response, and fault-handling behavior.
- Work with other engineering experts to update and refine simulation models based on test results.
- Document test results, findings, and recommendations to improve system performance and reliability.
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and eagerness to work in a hands-on testing environment.
- Basic knowledge of power systems modelling and HIL tools (e.g., PSCAD, RTDS, OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL).
- Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink for test automation and data analysis.
- Familiarity with at least one programming language Rust, C or Python is a plus.
- Understanding of solar PV, battery storage systems (BESS), and grid dynamics is a plus.
- Ability to collaborate in a fast-paced team and effectively communicate technical findings.
