About the role

#ubiquitous intro

Do you enjoy building and managing reliable, performant, and scalable infrastructure systems and platforms? Do you have a passion for driving operational excellence in an environment where technology is constantly evolving?  We are looking for a skilled and motivated Cloud Operations Engineer (COE) who will build, manage, support, and optimize our shared infrastructure platforms across various SaaS and cloud platform providers. We strive for close collaboration, shared ownership, and constant learning. As a COE, you will support our Site Reliability Engineers, Platform Engineers, and Developers with infrastructure-related responsibilities and tasks, ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our cloud-based infrastructure (cloud network, compute, and storage).  You will ensure that our shared infrastructure and other shared SaaS platforms are secure, reliable, performant, and optimized using best practices and standards. You’ll leverage data and insights of our cloud utilization and operations, overall secure posture, and business continuity and disaster recovery plans, to research, recommend, and implement tactical and strategic changes. Must be located in UK - ONLY

#the gist

We are looking for someone who is passionate about systems and operations engineering practices and methodologies to solve business requirements, constantly seeking new techniques, tools, and solutions to enhance our systems. As a startup in a fast-paced high growth environment, we are looking for an engineer that isn't bound by dogmatic principles assigned to traditional engineering roles. You’ll be exposed to, develop skills in, and be responsible for work that may at times fall into the traditional world of site reliability, platform, data, security, and software engineering.

#not awkward- just real
Before we get started, let’s be specific here with minimum skillsets. This is a mid-level engineer position. We use Kubernetes and Terraform almost exclusively in a 100% cloud-based (Google Cloud Platform) environment. You are an engineer who is still growing, comfortable in your use of these technologies in a code-based environment, understands and knows how to implement networking principles such as DNS, firewalls, and cloud-based networking, and has relevant experience managing infrastructure systems and cloud platforms in a systems, devops, cloud, or operations engineering role.

Why this job is exciting
  • Be a critical member of our Cloud and Reliability Engineering team designing, implementing, managing, and reviewing infrastructure operational and architectural state
  • Design, implement, and operate infrastructure systems using best practices in automation, monitoring, and observability
  • Collaborate with developers, SRE’s, and other engineers to ensure smooth deployments,  minimize downtime, maximize observability, share knowledge, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Experiment with cloud infrastructure environments and services
  • Technologies you will work with: GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, Helm, Datadog, Python, Go, and more
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation- don’t worry, we’re pretty stable (https://status.synd.io/)
About you
  • #important stuff
    • 3+ years of experience in a cloud operations environment operating as a systems, devops, cloud,  or similar operations engineering role building, maintaining, securing, and optimizing shared infrastructure systems and platforms
    • Experience with continuous integration and delivery frameworks
  • #really important stuff
    • You are eager to learn, share knowledge and ideas, and grow with our team
    • You are available and willing to step in for emergency response and incident management
    • You are relentlessly curious, willing to explore all aspects of the product to identify gaps in stability, scalability, and performance
    • You want to own and drive initiatives within Syndio that leverage and build your skills and interests
  • #REALLY really important stuff
    • You assume positive intent, are humble and eager, expect the best from yourself, value partnership over perfection, and provide grace and understanding in stressful situations
    • You value a remote work environment and know that it requires greater intentionality on your part to build and maintain strong working relationships
    • While this is a remote position, you MUST currently reside within 2 hours of London, England, United Kingdom. Relocation is not currently offered.
      • Kindly note, you must also be eligible to work there legally, as we are NOT able to support visa sponsorship or transfer at this time.
  • #bonus points
    • Coding experience is a plus (we use Python and Go) but this role will primarily rely on writing and understanding Terraform and Helm.
    • Experience with security best practices for cloud deployments

Role progression

  • Within 1 month, you’ll complete a comprehensive and supportive onboarding process and be able to make isolated contributions to the product, developer tooling, and infrastructure
  • Within 3 months, you’ll have a grasp of the complete set of components (services, tools, configuration, etc.) that make up the product and infrastructure. You will continue to make isolated contributions. You will be a full member of the on-call rotation.
  • Within 12 months, you’ll be able to suggest and implement complex changes to the infrastructure, developer tooling, and capacity planning.
