Job Description:
Major Accountabilities
- As a sector specialist, owns coverage and also helps guide and provide thought leadership to the broader investment team on issues related to power/energy, utilities, infrastructure, and general non-financial corporate research. May be asked to take on coverage of other sectors as well, on an as-needed basis. Assess current and anticipate future evolution of the credit and perform sustainability risk assessment. To possess deep knowledge of systemic issues, industry drivers, and issuer-specific factors. Develop and maintain historical and projected financial models, incorporating key financial metrics and deal-specific structural analysis; perform regular industry reviews for the benefit of the regional and global research and investment teams. Incorporating Sun Life internal rating methodology, assign and maintain up-to-date internal credit ratings and sustainability risk assessment.
- Based on assessment of credit and sustainability risk, and taking into consideration market pricing and relative value, formulate investment recommendations for the credits under the respective coverage or under review for initiation that are relevant and impactful for both insurance general accounts and non-insurance books.
- Review and coordinate credit research performed by analysts across the region to ensure research rigor and global consistency; and help their submission of new credits for adjudication or their annual reviews of issuers already on the investment approved list(s). This includes developing forced ranking models (e.g. CVR) to think through credit fundamentals and sustainability risk of issuers across the region.
- Represent in various sustainability engagements.
- Participate and contribute to various investment initiatives and projects led by RO Investments to support the development of new capabilities in the region, strengthen investment governance by implementing best practices from Corporate, or to respond to and deal with market events. Collaborate actively with Sun Life’s risk and investment functions, including risk and asset liabilities management, and with other teams on strategically important issues and initiatives like Sustainable Investing.
Specialized knowledge/ skills
- Ability to combine fundamental credit views with relative value analysis and Sustainability issues to produce an investment recommendation, and to present investment ideas effectively and clearly, e.g. to CIOs/PMs and others in organization.
- Investment knowledge across different asset classes a plus
- Comfortable working in a highly collaborative and flexible environment
- Ability to build effective relationships, influence and drive actions among a broad group of diverse stakeholders.
- Understanding the constraints inherent in investing for an insurance company.
- Given the multi-dimensional nature of the position, various types of problem-solving skills are required (e.g. analysis vs monitoring, financial model building vs internal and external communication, financial analysis vs sustainability considerations) through pivoting and/or using a combination of systematic and logical tools and techniques as well as open mind, creative-thinking and emotional intelligence. Requires thinking within a set frame of reference or around unstructured aspects, individually and as part of collaborative teamwork.
Education/ Qualifications and Experience:
- Advanced degree in economics, finance, accounting, expected. CFA or candidacy preferred.
- At least 3-5 years of experience in credit analysis of relevant sectors is required.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English. Ability to speak a second or third language fluently a plus.
- Familiarity with Rating Agencies (eg Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch) and their methodologies
- Familiarity with third-party data providers like Bloomberg, Capital iQ, Aladdin
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Aptitude for quantitative analysis
