You’ll join the Sell Online Tribe, the group shaping how merchants bring their businesses to life online. We design and build tools that help millions of entrepreneurs, from barbers to bakers, sell their products and services anywhere. Our focus is on Sell Online, a portfolio of products that includes Online Store, Bookings, Payment Links, and Gift Cards. Each of them empowers different types of merchants to sell online in the way that best fits their business. Together, they enable merchants to showcase their offerings, manage appointments, sell services and products, share payment links, issue gift cards, and get paid - all seamlessly from their phones.
SumUp Bookings is going upmarket, and we’re building a new squad to work alongside our existing team. As Engineering Manager, you will lead the development of core features like multi-user management and advanced deposit workflows. You’ll be responsible for shaping the squad - integrating existing talent and hiring new members - while establishing the team’s 'ways of working' within our successful product ecosystem.

What you’ll do
As the Engineering Manager for the Bookings squad, you will lead a team of engineers to deliver excellence for our merchants. Your role is a blend of people leadership, technical guidance, and strategic execution.
- Activate and scale a dedicated squad, taking responsibility for onboarding, hiring, and fostering a high-performing team culture.
- Stay hands-on with technical challenges by contributing to architectural decisions, conducting code reviews, and coaching engineers in designing robust feature implementations.
- Partner closely with a Product Manager and Product Designer (the "Leadership Trio") to define OKRs, manage the roadmap, and make the right technical trade-offs.
- Champion engineering best practices across the squad and the wider "Sell Online" tribe EM chapter to ensure consistent, high-quality value delivery.
- Conduct regular 1:1s to support career development, identify growth opportunities, and mentor your engineers to reach their full potential.
- Cultivate an "AI-first" mindset, empowering your team to identify repetitive tasks and implement agentic AI flows to automate workflows and accelerate delivery.
You'll thrive in this role if
- You have at least +2/3 years of experience leading teams of 4–7 engineers in agile, cross-functional environments.
- You come from a strong software engineering background (minimum 5 years as a developer) and can provide meaningful architectural mentorship and technical strategy.
- You have experience building or scaling teams from scratch, establishing "ways of working," and fostering a productive team culture.
- You are seasoned in modern delivery practices, including OKR-setting, sprint planning, and roadmap execution.
- You are AI-literate and curious - you are familiar with the evolving AI toolscape and know how to leverage AI/Agentic flows to improve engineering productivity.
- You have excellent English skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Bonus points for:
- Familiarity with marketplace, booking, or scheduling platforms.
- Experience in high-growth or scaling environments.
