Description of Work

This is an Engineer II position and will serve as the Senior Assistant Division Traffic Engineer for Division 5. This employee will be responsible for assisting with reviewing traffic impact analysis and project plans, performing general safety and mobility traffic studies and attending meetings related to these items as needed. They will be responsible for performing traffic engineering investigations for such requests as speed limit modifications, pavement marking modifications, general safety studies and operational challenges of the roadway system. They are expected to recommend necessary adjustments and assist with seeking funds for safety and operational improvements. This person is expected to coordinate and communicate with citizens, governmental agencies, other NCDOT staff, private engineering firms, and any other NCDOT customers.

This position requires considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic engineering; MUTCD, AASHTO road design guide, pc warrants, synchro, NCDOT TSMO Unit Design Manual, NCDOT Standard Drawings and Specifications and the NCDOT Construction Manual. This person should have working knowledge of NC general statues, administrative code, NCDOT fiscal and personnel policies and procedures. They must be able to adapt and utilize new technologies in traffic engineering to enhance the performance of existing and new traffic control devices. They are expected to perform other duties as requested by Division Traffic Engineer.

This person is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal and visual inspections. Must be able to multi-task and have strong organizational skills. They must have the ability to train and guide others to accomplish objectives. They must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment. Must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle. This person is subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles and could be subject to extreme hot and cold conditions. Steel toe shoes required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18 $63,927 - $111,871

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements:

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
