Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.This position is staffed by the Traffic Electronics Center group in the ITS & Signals Management section of the ITS and Signals Unit. This position evaluates and approves a wide variety of traffic signal control equipment and associated materials and hardware used on the Highway System. This position creates reports and provides in-depth data analysis of all traffic signal equipment evaluations. This position performs administrative and technical work associated with the ITS and Signals Qualified Products List program, which regulates traffic signal equipment supplied to the State by private contractors. This position evaluates and recommends approval of contractor supplied equipment proposed for use on Highway System projects. This position assists with the daily operations of the Traffic Electronics Center, assisting the 5 electronics technicians with technical issues such as programming, parts research, and test equipment. This position provides technical support to the other sections and units in the Mobility and Safety Division, the fourteen Highway Divisions, and municipalities.
The selected applicant for this position must be able to legally operate a state vehicle for frequent travel statewide with occasional overnight travel. Applicants must be able to traverse rough terrain on roadside environments. Communication and teamwork is a must.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18 $63,927.00 - $111,871.00
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of Electrical Engineering as it relates to design and construction, and maintenance of traffic signals.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office suit, including Access and Excel.
- Knowledge and understanding of Electrical and Electronic schematics, symbols, manuals, and associated documentation.
- Experience writing memos, reports, specifications, and emails that clearly convey technical information and engineering concepts.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
