Sr. Civil/Structural Engineer (Starship)

Starbase, TX
USD 125k - 175k
Description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

SR. CIVIL/STRUCTURAL ENGINEER (STARSHIP)

Building on the rapid advancement of the Starship program, we are moving into a new phase of facility and infrastructure growth. As the Starship launch cadence ramps up we are in need of multiple high rise facilities to support new vehicle builds and reflight refurbishment across various sites.  We are currently seeking structural engineers to serve as highrise specialists supporting rapid development and build of Starships next generation vertical integration facilities. It is these facilities that will ultimately enable the path to the Moon, Mars and beyond.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own structural engineering work packages for the production site design and development, with a heavy focus on integrated high rise facilities:
    • Design elements of multidisciplinary, multistory projects for new construction and modifications to existing structures.  This includes all phases of project development, from conceptual feasibility studies, preliminary design through construction completion
    • Perform standard and complex structural engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology and principles and other viable approaches. Our structures are unique with few precedents and aggressive schedules, ability to think outside the box is a must.
    • Perform building level structural analysis and design for large steel and reinforced concrete buildings, including shallow and deep foundations. The candidate will need to quickly iterate at the conceptual level to drive rapid project development
    • Create structural design drawings, calculations, and design summary presentations
    • Estimate material quantities, schedules, and costs for construction projects
    • Write and manage construction contracts with subcontractors across multiple disciplines
    • Perform project control tasks, including project scheduling, budgeting, and cost control
    • Manage multi-discipline design and construction projects, including coordination of typical systems found in high rise buildings (MEP, HVAC, etc)
    • Interact with other engineers, contractors, fabricators, and various stakeholders
    • Provide direct onsite field observations and resolve field conflicts in real time
  • Direct all field personnel to achieve completion of the project on schedule, within budget, with quality workmanship that conforms to the original plans and specifications
  • Maintain the construction schedule, identify and solve problems
  • Maintain a positive relationship with the SpaceX end user, contractors, suppliers, and other Space X employees
  • Engage with new vendors to shore up our pool of contractors that have the ability to execute high rise projects
  • Prepare schedules and supervise completion of the final punch list
  • Promote job site safety as a top priority, encourage safe work practices and rectify job site hazards immediately
  • Ensure all company employees and contractors are adhering to the company safety policy
  • Interact with tradesman, contractors, and building officials to coordinate and execute maintenance repair and installation of facilities support equipment
  • Communicate updates to budgetary, drawings, and design requirements to management and engineering

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in structural engineering, civil engineering, or other engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of experience with the design or build of structural infrastructure

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Design experience with steel and/or concrete high rise design projects including design and analysis of primary gravity and lateral force resisting systems
  • Exposure to high rise construction projects is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have worked through CA on multiple large scale projects and have a solid understanding of means and methods of construction of high rise projects
  • Experience with temporary stability analysis during construction
  • Familiarity with various types of steel erection equipment (tower cranes, large crawlers, etc)
  • Professional Engineering (PE) or Structural Engineering (SE) license
  • Knowledge of American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) steel manual, American Concrete Institute (ACI) code 318, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7, International Building Codes (IBC)

  • Knowledge of AISC Design Guide 7 (Industrial Building Design)
  • Experience creating structural detail drawings in AutoCAD, Revit, NX, Solidworks or similar drafting programs (Revit being the most pertinent).
  • Knowledge of ETABS, SAFE, SAP2000, ANSYS, FEMAP or similar analysis design programs
  • Understanding of other disciplines, such as, mechanical, electrical, geotechnical, and surveying. In particular, coordination of high rise systems during pre-construction through substantial completion
  • Experience reading, reviewing, and approving shop and fabrication drawings
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to independently and effectively manage projects in an extremely fast paced and changing environment; keep projects on time, deal with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and work with a diverse array of contacts
