Additional details:    

  • Join Southwest as a Spring 2025 Intern, with a 12-week internship lasting from January 28th through April 17th, 2025. 

  • Work fully remotely, with opportunities to connect with your Team and other workgroups virtually and potential to travel to visit our Corporate Campus in Dallas, Texas. 

  • There is limited group of states or localities ineligible for Employees to regularly perform their work off-site. Those ineligible locations are Alaska, California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming. 

  • If you currently reside in an ineligible state, you may relocate to an eligible state and be considered for an internship 

  • Dedicate a minimum of 24 hours each week to your internship responsibilities and tasks, up to 40 hours a week. We recommend checking your spring schedule now to ensure availability.  

  • Receive an hourly pay of $31 and receive a one-time, $1,000 stipend (Paid $500 on first paycheck and $500 at midpoint of internship) 

  • Receive free, unlimited travel privileges for yourself (taxes and fees may apply on international travel).  

  • Interns will receive any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.

The Intern will work part-time as a Cybersecurity Engineer Intern within the Technology Department. The Intern may be asked to support a variety of projects within one or more of the following Teams:

Cybersecurity Engineering Operations: This team maintains, monitors, and supports the Cybersecurity Capabilities utilized by Southwest Airlines to help reduce our cyber risk and attack surface. If you enjoy hands-on work with the technologies that keep Company infrastructure and individuals safe, then this is the Team you’d want to be a part of.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the Cybersecurity Engineer Intern may include but are not limited to: 

  • Under supervision, may be responsible for vendor management, partner governance, and oversight to deploy systems which are complete, designed and managed over life cycles.  

  • Work with a Team to research problems, plan solutions, recommend software and systems, and coordinate developments in an orderly manner to meet business requirements. Including, but not limited to, monitoring and testing performance and capacity for potential bottlenecks, identifying possible solutions, and working with partners to implement fixes.  

  • Responsible for ensuring the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability and resolving escalations of simple to medium complexity.  

  • Assist in the implementation and updates to the platform strategy and road map.  

  • Maintain awareness of technology trends in area of responsibility.  

  • Meet commitments and deliverables related to participating in projects. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required 

  • Must be at least 18 years of age 

  • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986 

  • You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process 

  • This position requires authorization to work in the United States as a permanent employee without sponsorship now or in the future 

Education:

  • Progress towards degree, major, or minor in Cybersecurity, Management Information Systems (MIS), Business, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or Information Technology, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Business OR similar degree 

  • Progress towards a 4-year undergraduate degree preferred 

  • To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student (as defined by your university) at the time of application and during the internship 

  • At least one semester remaining at the time the internship ends is preferred    

  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of software development methodologies, practices, concepts, and technologies obtained through formal training and/or work experience

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required

  • Experience or exposure to the following technologies are preferred: PING, eDirectory, Active Directory, CyberArk, InsightVM, QRadar SIEM

  • Knowledge of how passwords and multi-factor authentication works preferred

  • Exposure to Agile methodologies preferred

  • Previous internship, work experience, or project work in a classroom environment as a Software Engineer or Cybersecurity Engineer within the past 12 months is preferred

  • Project management skills, including principles, timelines, and budgets, are preferred

  • Under minimal supervision, ability to perform basic troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, solution development, and implementation within specific technology areas

  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems of simple to medium complexity, utilizing basic knowledge of hardware components, systems, software, and networking technologies

  • Basic partnering, negotiation, and communication skills in working with Business Customers and Technology support preferred

  • Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws is preferred

  • Able to prioritize effectively and take on multiple assignments, whether administrative or project related, while maintaining a successful level of completion in all responsible work

  • Under direction, able to develop, present, and communicate ideas and strategies in both technical and user-friendly language to small-medium audiences

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based, Customer service-oriented environment with a high regard for hospitality

  • Demonstrate programming aptitude and ability for logical and abstract thinking. 

  • Facilitate or complete analysis, design, and programming of viable solutions to high complexity business problems according to user specifications

  • Participate in system and acceptance testing

  • Works well in a culture that is open, direct, respectful, courteous, and compassionate

  • Quick learner, self-motivated, and team oriented

Time Commitment and Pay:

  • Required: Part-time 24-40hrs a week 

  • Must maintain a consistent weekly schedule during normal business hours at a max of 8hrs per day and no fewer than 24hrs per week 

  • Program Dates: January 28 – April 17, 2025 

  • $31 per hour + $1,000 stipend paid in two installments of $500
