Description

Who we are

Our mission at Sourcegraph is to make it so that everyone can code, not just ~0.1% of the population. We're building the code intelligence platform that powers the world's best code search and the most popular open-source code AI tool. It’s an exciting time to join Sourcegraph—AI has taken over the world, and we aim to automate 99% of the toil in software engineering with our code understanding and code AI tools, leaving the remaining 1% to the irreplicable creative spark from humans.

Our customers range from startups to the Fortune 500, 4/5 FAANG companies, government organizations, Uber, Plaid, and more. We’ve raised $225M at a $2.625B valuation from a16z, Sequoia, Redpoint, Craft and others. We’re making ambitious bets on our future and we’re looking to hire exceptional people to join our team as we make Sourcegraph one of the biggest and most influential companies in the world.

Location

🌎 While we hire almost anywhere in the world, we require someone to reside in San Francisco for this role.

Why this job is exciting

Join Sourcegraph's Infrastructure team and play a crucial role in empowering developers worldwide. We're responsible for building and maintaining the tools and systems that make Sourcegraph's development and release processes smooth, efficient, and reliable. Our team focuses on two key areas:

Developer Infrastructure (Dev Infra): We create and optimize tools and workflows that enhance productivity for Sourcegraph's engineering teams. This includes improving build systems, implementing code quality tools, managing CI/CD pipelines, and streamlining development environments

Release Management: We ensure Sourcegraph's products are deployed reliably and efficiently. This involves improving release tooling and automation, coordinating releases, and continuously improving our deployment processes for both cloud and self-hosted customers.

As the Engineering Manager for the Infrastructure team, you will lead the Dev Infra and Release teams, driving operational excellence, developer productivity, and release management. You will combine technical expertise with a product-focused approach, ensuring your teams deliver scalable solutions as Sourcegraph grows.

📅 Within one month, you will…

  • Start building a trusting relationship with your direct reports, peers, and stakeholders.
  • Understand the what, why, and how of the projects that your teams are working on, how those projects contribute to our company goals, as well as current status, risks, and mitigations.

📅 Within three months, you will…

  • Guide the Dev Infra and Release teams forward in reducing the time and toil from code to deployment and improving the observability of the testing/deployment environments and pipelines.

📅 Within six months, you will…

  • Guide the team in finding and implementing improvements in underserved parts of the stack
  • Reduce the complexity and toil of our releases and deployments
  • Foster the growth of your reports

📅 Within one year, you will…

  • Scale developer infrastructure, release tooling, and deployment to be more automated and reliable
  • Build a strong team brand and drive high levels of satisfaction from internal developers, our technical success team, and customer instance administrators

About you

As the ideal candidate, you lead with a product mindset, delivering solutions that drive platform value. Even when there is no formal product owner, you prioritize high-impact work while investing in core infrastructure.

DevEx and SRE expertise: You have a strong background in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and Developer Experience (DevEx), with hands-on experience in developer productivity, CI/CD pipelines, and release management for both Cloud services and on-prem customers. You are well-versed in technologies like Bazel and Kubernetes. You know Go and are familiar with TypeScript and the client ecosystem.

System and leadership balance: You maintain a broad view of the system, working with product teams to understand needs while guiding platform development. You effectively balance leadership responsibilities with hands-on work, adapting to immediate needs and long-term goals.

Startup mindset: You adjust your teams’ strategies to align with the company’s needs, knowing when to prioritize speed and when to focus on solving deeper, scalable challenges.

  • Experience with Kubernetes is a requirement. Experience with Bazel, Buildkite, and CI systems  are desirable, along with building and deploying Go-based microservice architectures. Experience with TypeScript clients is a plus, as is familiarity with large mono-repo code bases.
  • As the ideal candidate, you will have deep familiarity with the Google SRE operations model, as well as professional experience with the subjects covered in the Google SRE book. Experience with alternative ops models, such as those employed by Amazon, Netflix, and other high-velocity companies with large scale and deep technical stacks, is also desirable.
  • Some familiarity with Google Cloud Platform is a must. AWS and/or Azure experience are bonuses.

Nice to haves:

  • Security/secops experience is a bonus but not required.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We prioritize job seekers as our customers, unlike bigger job sites, by charging a small fee to provide them with curated access to the best companies and up-to-date jobs. This focus allows us to deliver a more personalized and effective job search experience.
  • Salaries for the engineering jobs on our site range from $100K-$200K. On average, senior engineer positions on our EchoJobs are about $160K.
  • The EchoJobs positions have been sourced and vetted from the top companies to work for in the US as a software engineer, including LinkedIn and other reputable job sites. We also have syndicated jobs from companies that have just raised funding, as well as those that have great unique products and culture. From all of these sources, our founder, Morgan, has also resourced the company's authenticity in terms of their website, public appearance, and more.
  • Yes, our users asked us for just this, so now our search filters allow you to search for your top jobs via location, as well as by onsite, remote, or both. Approximately 30% of our jobs are remote, so you’ve got the best options for you!
  • We have not yet implemented this option, but are considering doing so in the future. For the moment, you would need to cancel your subscription, and resubscribe when you wanted to come back.
  • We add new jobs to EchoJobs every day! We scan our sources for the newest jobs, verify them, and post them to EchoJobs within minutes. We add about 2,000-3,000 new jobs for you each day!
  • From starting your job search to getting hired, the entire job search process can take us software engineers anywhere between 3-6 months. However, at EchoJobs, we’re striving to shorten this duration by finding the best, newest jobs for you, so you can do less job searching, and more applying.
  • We’d recommend checking EchoJobs daily, as we add new jobs to the site each day. Additionally, if you got a chance to read our previous email on “what makes EchoJobs different from any other job search tools,” we also recommended that you set a job alert based on your job filters, so if you get emails on those new jobs, you could be checking more than once per day.
  • If you decide to continue with us after the 1-month trial, we definitely recommend this, as we all know it usually takes 3-6 months to find a quality job as a software engineer these days. So to best support you, we just adjusted our membership options at EchoJobs to monthly, 3 months, or 12 months (this option is more for passive job seekers looking a little bit for the future if they want to come back to work or make a job switch potentially. This lets you see what’s out there in case an even better fit job becomes available.)
  • EchoJobs is truly the only job site of its kind. We want to be THE spot for you to find the best job for you, and haven’t encountered any other company doing this. Other job sites are in niches besides software engineering or focus on a small portion of engineering jobs (like a specific coding language). In the words of Morgan, our founder, “I think what makes EchoJobs different is the amount of jobs, frequency that we add new jobs (we add 2,000-3,000 new jobs daily!), and the powerful search engines to find exactly the job you want more easily and efficiently. We can provide you with the most jobs that are vetted by us, we’ll continually find more new jobs for you, and we make it easier for you to apply and get hired.
