We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Back End (BE) to join our Engineering team. As a Senior Software Engineer - you will play a pivotal role in designing and developing services that drive the creation and simulation of cybersecurity environments. In this position, you’ll lead a team through complex technical projects and collaborate closely with other teams to build high-quality, scalable solutions.
You'll be tasked with ensuring our engineering practices are top-notch by guiding the team on best coding practices, system architecture, and cultivating a culture of continuous improvement. Your mentorship will be key in helping team members grow, while you contribute directly to code, design, and architecture.
What you'll be doing as a Senior Software Engineer, BE at SimSpace:
- Developing and designing services for the building & simulation of cybersecurity ranges as part of our Next Generation Platform, such as:
- Services that are responsible for cyber range design, deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management.
- Services that enable ingress and egress from air-gapped cyber ranges, incorporating the following functionalities:
i) Console connections.
ii) File upload and download.
iii) Virtual machine configuration.
iv) Range lifecycle data, metrics, and health status.
- Leading the team through complex technical projects including responsibilities such as:
- Writing design documentation for features and services.
- Analyzing approaches to delivering features based on product and customer requirements and recommending a path forward.
- Writing JIRA tickets and breaking down work for other team members.
- Collaborate with other Engineers, User Experience Designers, and Product Managers.
- Help the team improve in culture, coding best practices, and systems architecture.
- Supporting and mentoring other engineers.

What are the qualifications to apply? To be successful as a Senior Software Engineer, BE, you need to have:
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in software development with a solid focus on building large-scale, distributed systems.
- Expertise in an OOP-based language such as Kotlin or Java, with a demonstrable knowledge of API design, integration, and best practices.
- Proven experience with unit testing, integration testing, and deploying services in Kubernetes or a similar container orchestration platform.
- Demonstrated ability to design, build, and operate fault-tolerant systems, including experience in requirements gathering and project breakdown.
- Experience developing and operating services at scale.
- Some levels of networking, infrastructure, or configuration management domain expertise.
Nice to have but not required:
- Experience with message queues, asynchronous processing, or command and control (C2) frameworks is a plus, with a focus on managing complex systems and interactions.
- Some experience with Cybersecurity.
- Experience with greenfield projects.
- Experience with VMware vSphere, OpenStack, or other infrastructure virtualization platforms.
- Experience with cloud-based infrastructure providers such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
