Water and Wastewater Cybersecurity Service Portfolio: 6-12 Months Internship in Research & Development
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented intern to contribute to the "Enhancing Security and Resilience of System Dynamics in Water and Wastewater Control Systems under Cyberattack" project. The ideal candidate will focus on enhancing the security of our water and wastewater systems by capturing and analyzing system and environmental data, detecting security events, and integrating these capabilities into a user-friendly security assessment framework.
This role is perfect for someone passionate about cybersecurity and data analysis, and eager to apply their skills in a real-world project. You will collaborate closely with other interns and project leads, gaining invaluable experience in a cutting-edge technological environment. Your contributions will drive the project's success and shape the future of security operations. This internship is a mandatory on-site position at our Princeton, NJ, USA office. Remote work is not available. Siemens offers interns a competitive salary, relocation and housing allowances. We also welcome international applicants seeking a J-1 visa (6-12 months).
The challenges and responsibilities
- Develop a cybersecurity assessment toolkit for water and wastewater system security.
- Develop practical recommendations for water treatment systems to withstand cyber-physical threats.
- Support the development of novel controller designs that balance operational efficiency and resilience to cyber-attacks.
- Develop a framework for enhancing system security through reduced identifiability.
- Support deriving insight into the trade-offs between identifiability, robustness, and security in MIMO systems.
- Engage in the design and enhancement of a security dashboard, focusing on intuitive data presentation and user interaction.
- Participate in the iterative process of testing and validation, ensuring the accuracy and effectiveness of the event categorization and detection logic.
- Assist in creating methods and code to gather data from water and wastewater networks on various levels to collect what is needed to make correct decisions about the security status of such networks.
- Learn about Siemens products that enable security scanning, security testing, security monitoring, vulnerability monitoring, and automated hardening/configuration, as well as asset management.
- Work collaboratively with other team members, particularly in areas of overlap between security event detection and other system components.
Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
- Must pursue a M.Sc. in cybersecurity, or a related subject with a strong cybersecurity focus.
- Initial experience with industrial environments, Operations Technology (OT).
- Programming knowledge in Python, MATLAB or Julia
- Proficiency in data analytics and classification, with an ability to identify and interpret patterns in complex datasets.
- Foundation in cybersecurity principles, especially intrusion detection and response mechanisms.
- Background in systems integration and the ability to work with various data sources and formats.
- Written and verbal proficiency in English
- Successful candidates must be able to work with controlled technology in accordance with US Export Control Law.

Preferred:
- Existing background and expertise in water/wastewater.
- Prior exposure / experience with Siemens Control Systems.
- Familiarity with dynamic systems and control theory.
- Interest in control systems, cybersecurity, and machine learning.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, crucial for developing accurate detection logic and dashboard functionalities.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, essential for collaborating with other interns and project stakeholders.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt, with a willingness to delve into new tools and technologies as required by the project.
- Experience with professional software development environments (e.g., Jira, Gitlab, or similar platforms).

The pay range for this position is $32,550 - $55,800. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
