Heroku believes that in the future, all applications will use AI/ML - just as all web applications use a database today. We are building a platform and developer experience that makes it easy for engineers to securely use these tools within the same trust envelope as their existing Heroku applications. As a platform engineer, you will focus on building elegant, curated, opinionated features that allow customers to use inference, evaluations, embeddings, RAG, guardrails, vector databases, and agentic workflows.

Additionally, you will help internal teams leverage these platform features to build both internal systems and not-yet-imagined customer features. You bring practical, real-world knowledge of AI/ML and building distributed, highly available systems that operate at web scale. This is a senior technical individual contributor role, reporting to the Director of AI/ML Engineering.


Your Impact:

• Deliver high-performing, well-documented, maintainable code that delivers new features and improves platform stability and performance.
• Collaborate effectively and joyfully with Heroku engineers, leaders, and product managers to deliver software that delights customers.
• Write ideas, plans, designs, experiments, test-plans, documentation to gather feedback and spread knowledge across Heroku
• Work in a consultative fashion to improve communication, teamwork and alignment among teams inside and outside of the organization
• Ensure that we are continuously raising our standard of engineering excellence in AI
• Mentor and guide engineers across Heroku in AI/Ml technologies and their applications
• Participate in the AI team’s on-call rotation to address complex problems in real-time and keep services operational and highly available

Required Skills:

• BS or MS in Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or related disciplines or equivalent experience in technical leadership roles.
• Minimum of 3+ years of proven track record in individual-contributor tech roles in software engineering teams, with proven expertise in AI and platform engineering.
• Experience building production systems that use AI/ML technologies to solve real-world problems.
• Solid understanding of evaluation (measuring) and improving AI/ML systems to ensure solutions keep pace with changing data.
• Data literacy skills allow you to be comfortable with the myriad of types, sizes, and structures of data that AI projects may use.
• Deep programming experience with at least one programming language and willingness to learn Golang for production systems.
• Deep experience with relational databases, distributed systems, CI/CD pipelines, github, PRs, unit testing, functional testing, and modern software engineering practices.
• Bonus points for experience with kubernetes, terraform, and observability tools (e.g. OTEL, logging, etc).
• Bonus points for experience with AI/ML frameworks and tools such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, HuggingFace, LangChain, etc.
• Bonus points for familiarity with inference servers (e.g., vLLM, Triton, Ollama), vector databases, Retrieval-Augmented Generation methods, fine-tuning methods, etc.
• Experience with agile development methodologies (e.g., scrum)
• Ability to support an environment for clear and open discussion of all issues. You involve the right people, from your team and others, to resolve critical issues.
• Experience in continuous delivery and short-release cycles.

Preferred Skills:

• Familiarity with Heroku and Salesforce platforms

For New York-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $151,800 to $227,700.

For Colorado-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $138,000 to $189,800.

For Washington-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $13,800 to $208,800.

For Washington D.C based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $151,800 to $189,800.

For California-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $151,800 to $227,700.

For Hawaii-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $13,800 to $189,800.

Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for incentive compensation, equity, benefits.
