Summary:

The Collins Aerospace Applied Research & Technology organization seeks candidates with proven research credentials in model-based engineering to join the Engineering Simulation Group. The team is part of the Collins Aerospace Advanced Methods Department, and geographically distributed in the US and Italy, and works with Collins product teams and external research sponsors to extend both the state of the art and the state of the practice of Cyber Physical, Embedded systems and AI-enabled systems development.

The ideal candidate has a mix of academic and research background in Model-Based Engineering and experience in aircraft-level modeling Verification, Validation and Accreditation (VVA) to support a certification decision for a large-scale complex M&S application.

The candidate is required to be adaptable to change, possess critical thinking skills and determined to accomplish tasks based on program schedule, collaborate with teammates, enjoy learning new technologies, be self-motivated and contribute to a positive work environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Candidate will develop new model-based engineering methods and solutions exploring evolutionary immersive VR/AR approaches, and data-driven methods for architecture trade-off analysis, design, integration, and test of the aircraft state estimation system; Aircraft and mission system in operational environments modeling Verification, Validation and Accreditation (VV&A) to support a certification decision for a large-scale complex M&S application.
  • Contribute to the definition of R&D activities within an international research community, including technology development within collaborative multi-national research programs, combining research and development skills.
  • Lead the maturation and transition of transformative technologies to industrial business units bridging the gap between exploratory research and industrial application.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar discipline, and up to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in aircraft level modeling and simulation.
  • Strong technical writing and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and develop solutions.
  • Motivated self-starter with a strong enthusiasm to learn and passion for speed and agility; proactive in building sound, collaborative relationships, and skills to work in international teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in an appropriate technical discipline, such as Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar discipline and up to 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Deep Technical knowledge of flight dynamics, aircraft architectures, state estimation sensor systems (e.g. DME/VOR, ILS, Air Data Systems, and Radar Altimeters, etc.) and their environmental operating conditions.
  • Experience with simulation/modeling of aircraft sensor systems, sensor fusion algorithms, and environmental coexistence mitigation approaches.
  • Experience with methods for uncertainty propagation, sensitivity analysis and scenario-based V&V.
  • Experience with scientific computing environments and modeling paradigm such as Modelica, MATLAB, Simulink, or ANSYS, etc.
  • Experience in developing in environments including Gazebo, AirSim, Unreal Engine or Unity.
  • Familiarity with ML frameworks such as, e.g., Keras, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, Tensorflow, Matlab Deep Learning Toolbox.
  • Familiarity with modern programming languages (C/C++, Java, etc.).
  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python.
  • Knowledge of project management.
