Controls Engineering Manager

Solihull, UK | Onsite

Modern aircraft are changing. Electrification is no longer a concept sketch on a whiteboard — it’s hardware, firmware and control systems being built right now. If you’ve ever wanted your FPGA designs to move something bigger than a lab bench motor, this is your moment.

We’re looking for an experienced FPGA & Controls Engineering Lead to head up the development of control systems and firmware for electric motors and power converters, based at our Solihull site.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You won’t be managing from the sidelines. You’ll be in the detail — guiding architecture, reviewing VHDL, shaping verification strategies, and ensuring robust, safety-critical design standards are followed every step of the way.

What You’ll Do

Lead a team of engineers developing FPGA-based control systems and firmware for electric motor and power converter applications Drive robust engineering processes and ensure compliance with aerospace development standards Apply deep technical expertise in firmware and controls to support design, development and verification activities Take a hands-on role in DO-254 compliant FPGA design, prototyping and verification Collaborate with project managers and work package owners to allocate resources effectively and deliver against programme objectives Champion innovative, high-quality solutions across complex, safety-critical systems

What You’ll Learn

How next-generation electrified aircraft systems are developed in collaboration with global airframers The unique safety, reliability and certification requirements that shape aerospace control systems How cutting-edge control strategies transition from concept to flight-ready hardware

You’ll be operating where power electronics, control theory and certification rigor intersect — which is exactly where the future of flight is being built.

What You Must Have

Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering Strong experience with FPGA tools and technologies (Microchip, Xilinx, SoC platforms, Modelsim, MATLAB, Simulink) Proven practical experience in FPGA design and verification using VHDL, including:

Requirements capture

Simulation and code coverage

Synthesis

Place & route

Timing analysis and closure

Experience delivering complex technical work packages Demonstrated hands-on capability across design, development, prototyping and verification Experience delivering DO-254 compliant FPGA solutions Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams A proactive, innovative mindset with a focus on quality and robust design

What We’d Prefer

Experience with Agile methodologies (SCRUM, Kanban) Exposure to Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and SysML Knowledge of communication protocols, DSP and FPGA-based maths implementations System on Chip (SoC) design targeting FPGA or ASIC Implementation of closed-loop control laws within FPGA applications Experience with motor control systems and sensing components (LVDT, resolvers) Background in military or aerospace systems compliant to RTCA/DO-254

Why Solihull?

Solihull is a growing hub for electrified aviation technology — a place where control algorithms don’t just simulate well, they power real hardware. You’ll work alongside specialists in motors, electronics, systems and certification, contributing to programmes that redefine how aircraft are powered.

This is more than a firmware role. It’s leadership in a field that’s rewriting the physics of propulsion.

If you’re ready to build systems that don’t just compile, but fly — apply now.
