In this role, you will develop our backend systems that power the most used surface areas of the app, across Home, Search, Ads, Notifications, and more.
In the advertising domain, you will build innovative solutions to power real-time bidding systems, personalized advertising experiences, and tools to help any advertiser run successful campaigns on our platform. With our ads system still in its early stages, this is a unique opportunity to shape and develop a world-class, ML-driven advertising platform from the ground up.
In search and discovery, you will contribute to the cutting-edge real-time recommendation engines and a powerful backend that drives ML ranking that enable users to discover and interact with experiences across Roblox. These systems drive exploration and engagement across all surfaces, helping users find relevant and exciting content. Looking ahead, our team aims to innovate further through experimentation, building distributed systems to support our scale, and driving new, bold customer features.

You Will:
- Design and build the systems architecture that powers Roblox content recommendation, search and distribution across surfaces.
- Lead the design and implementation necessary to grow the backend infrastructure across our tech stack of C#, Go, and several data pipeline technologies.
- Collaborate with other teams (Social, Economy, Platform) within Roblox to make sure we are building products with a community first approach.
- Balance researching new technologies with a practical approach to accomplish the research efforts into the Roblox products
- Communicate with the industry and communities where applicable and be ambassador for Roblox.
You Are:
- Battle Ready: You have 7+ (for principal) or 4+ (for senior) years of software development experience.
- Knowledgeable about server-side architecture/design and compiled languages such as C#, Java, C++, or others.
- Experience designing and building full-stack systems behind consumer-facing APIs that can handle large numbers of concurrent users.
- You have a BS in Computer Science or a related discipline, Advanced degrees are a definite plus.
- A Leader: You have initiated and facilitated challenging technical decisions across multiple teams and organizations.
- User oriented: While deeply technical, you always start with the needs of the user, whether they are Roblox users or internal engineers.
- Creative: You take a creative and strategic approach to solving hard problems. You simplify the complex. You bring in fresh ideas from new places.
For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits.
Roles that are based in our San Mateo, CA Headquarters are in-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional in-office on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).
