Program Description: 

 

The Sophomore Career Exploration Internship gives undergraduate sophomores the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at a unique institution. Through dynamic, project-based work assignments and professional development activities, students get: 

  • A cohort-based learning model with a strong sense of community 

  • Real-world experience that helps them build strong skills and knowledge in their area of interest 

  • The chance to contribute to meaningful work that makes an impact on the lives of all Americans 

  • Opportunities to meet, network with, and work alongside our mission-driven, curious colleagues—all of whom are happy to share their experiences and advice 

  • An experienced professional mentor to support them throughout the program 

  • Access to learning events with senior leaders from the New York Fed, giving them direct insight into the public service and financial services world 

 

Sophomore interns work in one specific business area or function for ten weeks, and have access to opportunities for collaboration with other students and employees from around the Bank.  

 

At the end of the program, students leave with strong skills, professional connections, and meaningful experiences that will support them in their long-term careers. 

 

Our Unique Work: 

System IT collaboratively imagines, plans, delivers, runs, and measures business technology solutions to foster the stability, integrity, and efficiency of our nation’s monetary, financial, and payments system. Our technology teams are positioned to effectively serve the Fed’s mission and businesses as an enterprise IT team. We are organized to serve the local business and take advantage of scale, enabling us to benefit from shared capabilities, standardized processes, and broader technical capacity and expertise. 

 

How You’ll Make an Impact as a Technology Intern (Sophomore) 

  • Candidates will be responsible for technology work in any of our IT areas, including but not limited to information security, data management, software development, business operations, or end user services.  

  • Responsibilities may include coding software, testing code, preparing and managing data, and/or running competitive analyses and research for our technology teams.  

  • Additional responsibilities may include analyzing current and new technology architecture designs or implementing and deploying applications across multiple environments. 

 

The Unique Skill Sets We’re Looking For: 

  • As a sophomore intern in the Technology Track, you have a demonstrated interest in computer science, information systems, application development or business technology. Specific technical skills may be required depending on area and project.  

  • Other general requirements include:  

  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite  

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to assimilate new information, and manage multiple tasks  

  • Basic programming skills in one or more areas: Java, JavaScript, SQL, Scala, Python, HTM/CSS  

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written  

  • Ability to grasp information quickly  

  • Attention to detail  

  • Ability to work productively in a high-performance team atmosphere and as an independent analyst

Salary RangeYour regular wages for the 10 weeks will be paid on a semi-monthly basis and will be calculated based on an annual salary of $65,600

This position requires access to confidential supervisory information (CSI) and/or Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) information. Access to CSI and FOMC information is limited to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, individuals who meet the definition of “protected individual” under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3), and certain other nonimmigrants. All non-U.S. citizens authorized to access CSI and/or FOMC information must sign a declaration of intent to expeditiously become a lawful permanent resident and thereafter a U.S. citizen when eligible.
