Product Line Application Engineer – Custom Test Systems

Location: Viersen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany

Department: Engineering

Work Location: onsite

Description

The Product Line Applications Engineer is the technical owner of "how the product is used" for the high-power product line — bidirectional (regenerative) DC sources and loads for battery, e-mobility and data center power test. The role turns product capability into proven, demonstrable customer applications: through custom project engineering, live demonstrations, application content, and a dedicated high-power applications lab that this role is expected to specify, build up and operate.

The position is part of the Product Line organization and serves as the technical bridge between Product Management, R&D, Sales, and the field organization. It is neither a sales role nor a development role, but a customer-facing technical leadership position that ensures effective collaboration across all functions and translates application insights into successful products and solutions.

Responsibilities

Product line application ownership

  • Act as the technical authority for target applications of the product line
  • Translate customer use cases into scalable system concepts (topology, power/voltage/current envelope, dynamics, paralleling and master-slave configurations, energy recuperation, grid impact).
  • Support Product Line with technical clarification, sizing, configuration and feasibility statements.
  • Feed structured application back into roadmap and requirement definition; contribute application-driven input to specifications and competitive benchmarking.

Custom projects and special engineering

  • Capture, challenge, and refine customer requirements; develop technical specifications and system architectures for application-specific configurations and integrated test solutions.
  • Own the technical thread for customer-specific testing challenges, serving as the primary technical interface between customers, Product Management, and R&D.
  • Drive technical solution evolution throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Ensure a seamless handover to Service and Field Support through complete technical documentation, knowledge transfer, and training.

 Demonstrations and technical enablement

  • Design, build and maintain demo setups that show real application value rather than data-sheet numbers — e.g. dynamic battery profile, high-slew rate load steps, bidirectional energy flow, multi-unit paralleling, protocol and automation integration.
  • Deliver demos and technical deep dives at customer sites, trade shows, and remotely from the applications lab.
  • Manage the demo lab: configuration, logistics, availability planning.
  • Produce application notes, reference test setups, example automation scripts, webinars and training material; train sales, FAEs and channel partners.

Applications lab — build and operate

  • Define the technical concept and requirement specification for a high-power applications lab: power envelope, grid connection and transformer capacity, mains distribution and protection, DC busbar and cabling concept
  • Drive the build-up as technical project lead: budget input and investment justification, supplier and contractor selection, installation supervision, commissioning and acceptance.
  • Establish the safety and compliance framework for high-voltage / high-energy operation.
  • Build remote access capability so that demos, customer witness tests and troubleshooting can be run from the lab without travel.
  • Use the lab as the verification environment for custom project configurations before shipment and for reproducing customer-reported issues.

Automation and interfaces

  • Realize and support test automation for demos and projects: SCPI, Python, LabVIEW/TestStand or equivalent.
  • Apply and advise on industrial interfaces relevant to the product line: Ethernet-based control, Modbus TCP, EtherCAT, PROFINET, CAN/CAN FD
  • Support integration into customer test benches, higher-level test management software and existing infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Degree in electrical engineering, power electronics, mechatronics or comparable.
  • Several years in applications engineering, test engineering, commissioning or system integration — with genuine hands-on experience on high-power and high-voltage equipment (hundreds of volts and tens of kilowatts and above).
  • Sound understanding of power electronics: converter topologies, regenerative/bidirectional operation, control loops and dynamic behavior, protection concepts, grid interaction and power quality.
  • Practical knowledge of at least one target application field (battery test, e-mobility, energy storage, or data center / high-power DC distribution).
  • Qualification and mindset for safe work on electrical installations (Elektrofachkraft or equivalent); willingness to take on responsible-person duties for the lab.
  • Programming/scripting ability for test automation (Python or equivalent) and comfort with instrument remote-control interfaces.
  • Ability to work customer-facing and to present technically to both engineers and decision makers.
  • German and English, both business fluent.

 What we offer

  • Join us in driving the “Electrification of Everything”
  • Significant scope to shape quality strategies and optimize processes
  • Continuous professional development and targeted support, especially in lean and Kaizen methodologies
  • A modern, well-equipped workplace in a dynamic and innovative environment
  • Flexible working hours to support a healthy work-life balance
