Department Overview

Rakuten Institute of Technology (RIT) https://rit.rakuten.com, the core AI research wing of Rakuten, is spread across six geographical locations including Tokyo, Singapore, Boston, San Mateo, Bengaluru, and Paris. This division consists of AI research scientists with specialization in machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, knowledge discovery and data mining.

The Language program is focused on automating product catalog creation. We leverage advanced NLP/ML to extract structured information from unstructured product data (titles, descriptions, images). Furthermore, we aim to improve language understanding through the use of weakly/semi-supervised and unsupervised learning, as well as customer behavior data.

Position Details

- Design algorithms and develop prototype systems to address defined scientific problems

- Present algorithms and prototype systems to business stakeholders

- Collaborate with engineers to deploy algorithms and prototypes into production services

- Work with other researchers on studies and academic paper publications

- Participate in scientific conferences and contribute to the research community through paper publications

Mandatory Qualifications:

- Ph.D. in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience

- Strong publication record in top conferences/journals (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, ICLR, ICML, NeurIPS, SIGIR, WWW, WSDM, KDD, AAAI) in NLP, machine learning, information retrieval or related fields

- Fluent in English for effective communication with researchers, engineers, and business stakeholders

- Ability to read and process Japanese text (our product catalog is in Japanese)

- Proficient in Python for coding

- Skilled in PyTorch for model development

- Experience working in a Linux environment

Desired Qualifications:

- Proficiency in coding with C, C++, or Java

- Experience with distributed computing frameworks like Spark or Hadoop

- Fluency in Japanese for effective communication with researchers, engineers, and business stakeholders
