The Global Ad Technology Department (GATD) manages the whole of the advertising systems that power Rakuten. We are a cross-functional and data-driven organization working together in a diverse team spread across five countries: Japan, Singapore, India, China and UK.

Rakuten Marketing Japan is a digital advertisement solutions company. We provide affiliate services, display ads, search ads, and so on, but not limited to those areas.

Our group is responsible for working with Business Units and Development / Tech Teams, in the following areas: product management, support troubleshooting communication and reporting as well as creation and/or delivery of new product. It is very important to have a business perspective and work closely with the stakeholders to deliver clear requirements as to release quality products with value to our customers.

Position Details

- Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs using PHP and Laravel.

- Implement and optimize database solutions, including relational and NoSQL databases.

- Work closely with frontend developers to integrate user-facing elements with server-side logic.

- Collaborate with DevOps teams to implement containerization and ensure scalability and reliability of backend systems.

- Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, production deployment, and troubleshooting sessions.

- Lead efforts to refactor and modernize legacy applications into better architectural designs.

- Drive best practices in software development, including coding standards, code reviews, and testing.

- Help in mentoring junior developers and contribute to the overall growth of the engineering team.

Mandatory Qualifications:

- Minimum 6 years of proven and recent professional experience in PHP.

- Expertise in Laravel framework.

- Proficiency in designing and developing RESTful APIs.

- Strong understanding and experience with NoSQL databases like MongoDB.

- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).

- Experience with databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar.

- Hands-on experience in building highly scalable and reliable systems (including deployment of monitoring of such systems).

- Proficient understanding of version control systems (Git).

- Strong knowledge of software design principles and architectural patterns.

- Ability to port and modernize legacy applications.

- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure).

- Strong familiarity in working with Unix-based systems (terminal, shells, editors, scripts, etc.).

- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex issues.

- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

- Ability to collaborate effectively with both local and international teams.

Desired Qualifications:

- Ability to communicate complex technical work, documentation and issues to non-technical stakeholders.

- Experience working in teams using agile methodologies.

- Knowledge of frontend technologies.

- Understanding of microservices architecture.

- Experience with other PHP frameworks (Symfony, CodeIgniter, etc.).

- Previous exposure to message brokers (RabbitMQ, Kafka).
- Conversational Level Japanese
