Business Overview

The Technology Platforms Division (TPD) is responsible for building and operating the infrastructure and ecosystem platforms which power the Rakuten Group. Our mission is to provide our Rakuten Cloud and Ecosystem Platforms which will deliver Core Value to accelerate the growth of Rakuten Group services.

Department Overview

The Membership Platform Department (MPD) is thinking big: we create scalable platforms that power the Rakuten Ecosystem worldwide. In our department, you will join a global team of experienced technologists who build the foundation of our services.

The ID Service focuses on Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM) with the mission to empower Rakuten Services with an innovative, accessible and stable CIAM platform. The ID Core Platform Section is engaged in building and maintaining secure and stable identity core platform enabling CIAM experience.

Overall Position Details

As an Application Engineer, you will use your development skills to build applications, by working on requirements (gathering, definition), supporting QA team to design entire test plan (functional, operational, failure, load, etc.), risk assessment, release judgement, and reviews (design, test plan, test result). You will also come up with innovative ideas to help the product and the team, in order to improve overall efficiency of the team. 

 

Your responsibilities will be as follows: 

- Consult with architects. 

- Collaborate with Product Manager, QA, DevOps, and remote teams. 

- Design solutions as well as develop software.

- Collaborate with other teams and stakeholders to understand and define requirements. 

- Take responsibility of the product- monitoring, troubleshooting, and bug-fixing when needed. 

- Create and maintain technical documentation. 

- Actively participate in project planning and scheduling. 

- Grow team members' technical and product development skills, through mentoring.

Mandatory Qualifications: 

- Experience in Java and/or Kotlin development (5 years +)

- Experience in server application design and development, including middleware (3 years +)

- Strong knowledge of software development principles and hands-on programming experience

- Familiarity with software development methodology and release processes 

- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

- A strong interest in technology and a willingness to learn new software and systems

- Familiarity and experience with web technologies such as http, RESTful API, cookies, etc

- Database experience (Relational, Redis or Cassandra)

- Messaging Middleware familiarity and experience (such as Kafka and/or RabbitMQ)

Desired Qualifications:

- Experience in building Docker, Kubernetes databases

- Experience in implementation of authentication/authorization services using OAuth2 and/or OIDC

- Experience with other programming languages experience (Python, Rust, etc.)

- Knowledge of logging and/or monitoring middleware such as ELK, APM 

- Knowledge of public cloud (especially GCP) 

- Frontend development experience
