Department Overview
The Business Support Development (BSD) department plays a crucial role in providing system support for various operations between users, clients, and Rakuten businesses. Our department provides diverse services across three main areas: DATA, Business Support/Accounting, and CRM. We strive to ensure the highest quality standards in system delivery and support while pursuing business process optimization and efficiency.
The Operational Excellence Group provides reliable monitoring platform for Business Support Development Department (BSD) to prevent any system trouble. By working closely within each team, we are involved in a wide range of development projects related to e-commerce, including monitoring and system infra construction. This presents a highly challenging environment and offers unique experiences that are distinctive to Rakuten.
Position:
Why We Hire
As an experienced site reliability engineer, you will be involved in constructing, configuring, upgrading, and monitoring the systems that keep our services up and running in all environments.
You should be adept at troubleshooting application issues at both the infrastructure and application level. You should practice sustainable incident response and blameless postmortems.
Position Details
- Design and build infrastructure and automation to rapidly deliver our web services.
- Troubleshoot system and network failures as well as application crashes.
- Create CI/CD pipelines using tools as Jenkins or similar.
- Proactively engage in service capacity planning and demand forecasting, performance analysis, and system tuning to identify potential issues before they happen.
- Continuously optimize operations and reduce risk through automation and process improvement.
- Act as a technical expert to introduce new technologies and drive the adoption of these technologies.
Work Environment
The OPE team consists of 5 to 10 members and operates in a global environment where both English and Japanese are spoken. Active discussions and exchanges of opinions are encouraged as part of daily meetings. Regular one-on-one meetings are held to ensure a safe and secure working environment where team members can feel comfortable and supported.
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience
- Experience deploying and managing internet facing web services.
- Experience with DevOps processes, culture, and tools (3 years +)
- Demonstrated experience measuring and monitoring availability, latency and overall system health
- Experience with monitoring tools like ELK, Grafana.
- Strong sense of ownership, customer service, and integrity demonstrated through clear communication
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous work experience as a Java application developer is a plus
- Experience provisioning virtual machines and other cloud services. e.g. Azure or Google Cloud
- Experience configuring and administering services at scale such as MTA, Redis, MySQL
- Experience with messaging tools like Kafka.
- Experience working in a globally distributed engineering team
- Experience with container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience with CI/CD tools, such as Jenkins for release and operation automation
