About Quizlet:

Inspired by our belief that anyone can learn anything and powered by our own curiosity, we build the smartest tools we can imagine to help students learn.

Quizlet is the popular, global learning platform and app that millions of students, teachers and everyday people use to study any subject imaginable for school, work or as part of their personal interests -- including two-thirds of high school students and half of all college students in the US. Combining cognitive science and machine learning, Quizlet guides students through adaptive study activities to confidently reach their learning goals. We’re on track to become the undisputed leader in user-generated learning content and engagement, at the scale of YouTube.

Valued at $1 billion, Quizlet has raised over $60 million in venture capital from investors including Icon Ventures, Union Square Ventures, General Atlantic, Costanoa Ventures, Owl Ventures, and Altos Ventures.

To serve our global community of learners, our teams tackle lofty technical challenges and design for use cases across cultures and languages. We work hard, act like owners, and collaborate every chance we get. We’re energized by the potential to power more learners through multiple approaches and various tools.

About the Team:

Quizlet’s Platform Engineering team gets big things done. We are a team of curious individuals with experience in backend software engineering, traffic shaping, distributed systems, developer experience, infrastructure engineering, and related reliability. We love to solve scaling challenges as code and strive to build resilient distributed systems that scale while enabling feature velocity. We build, evolve, and operate tools, frameworks, and infrastructure that handle application delivery from source to production.

Currently, we run production in Kubernetes and continue to modernize other parts of the infrastructure using cloud-native technologies. To automate application delivery and all things infrastructure, we follow the gitOps philosophy to perform continuous delivery and infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices. Additionally, we follow Agile development methodologies to plan our projects.
Quizlet embraces a philosophy of service ownership by empowering service developers to build highly observable, reliable, and resilient services.

About the Role:

As a Sr. Platform Engineer, you will work on strategic projects to figure out solutions to continue making our systems more resilient as we move to a service-oriented architecture.

This role requires a strong partnership with the Product Engineering and Technical Infrastructure teams. You’ll be working on strategic projects aiming to increase service reliability, improve observability, and safe/rapid service delivery while ensuring feature velocity and cost efficiency. An enabler of repeatable processes, you will contribute to building, extending or improving existing tools and frameworks that not only reduce toil. Additionally, you will enable Quizlet teams to perform tasks more swiftly, securely, and reliably. Our charter is "To deliver a performant and delightful customer experience on a low-friction platform for developers."

This is a hybrid role based out of our Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, and San Francisco office hubs.

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to key projects that solve feature velocity, scaling, performance, and infrastructure problems
  • Improve our ability to understand and respond to the performance of our systems
  • Enhance service insights and observability that tell us details about our traffic patterns
  • Use a combination of skills in systems and software engineering, configuration management, and networking to build and run distributed, fault-tolerant software systems and infrastructure to create reusable services and modularized infrastructure components
  • Drive automation to reduce toil
  • Be in the thick of solving problems of running systems at scale
  • Support production by participating in our on-call rotation

What you bring to the table:

  • 5+ years of experience as a Platform Engineer building and enabling the creation of scalable, observable, and resilient distributed services in cloud native infrastructure environments
  • You feel energized by solving unique problems
  • Passionate about automation and building resilient products
  • Enthusiasm for building software and system integrations to bridge the gaps between our core infrastructure and the software we deliver to our customers
  • Proficiency with containers, Kubernetes and Terraform
  • You're fluent in at least one of our languages (GoLang and/or Python) and willing to dive into other languages as needed
  • Familiarity with incident management/response best practices with large-scale distributed systems
  • A systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with good communication skills and a strong sense of ownership
  • Ability to work across team boundaries to identify and solve pain points that affect engineering velocity, system resilience, system/service performance

Bonus points if you have:

  • Significant production experience with Kubernetes at a very large scale
  • Familiarity using service mesh implementations with a proxy (Istio, LinkerD, Envoy)
  • Expertise in building platforms that enable services to be delivered via software to enable Product teams to be self-sufficient and operate the services they own
  • Familiarity with Hashicorp products like TFCloud

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We prioritize job seekers as our customers, unlike bigger job sites, by charging a small fee to provide them with curated access to the best companies and up-to-date jobs. This focus allows us to deliver a more personalized and effective job search experience.
  • Salaries for the engineering jobs on our site range from $100K-$200K. On average, senior engineer positions on our EchoJobs are about $160K.
  • The EchoJobs positions have been sourced and vetted from the top companies to work for in the US as a software engineer, including LinkedIn and other reputable job sites. We also have syndicated jobs from companies that have just raised funding, as well as those that have great unique products and culture. From all of these sources, our founder, Morgan, has also resourced the company's authenticity in terms of their website, public appearance, and more.
  • Yes, our users asked us for just this, so now our search filters allow you to search for your top jobs via location, as well as by onsite, remote, or both. Approximately 30% of our jobs are remote, so you’ve got the best options for you!
  • We have not yet implemented this option, but are considering doing so in the future. For the moment, you would need to cancel your subscription, and resubscribe when you wanted to come back.
  • We add new jobs to EchoJobs every day! We scan our sources for the newest jobs, verify them, and post them to EchoJobs within minutes. We add about 2,000-3,000 new jobs for you each day!
  • From starting your job search to getting hired, the entire job search process can take us software engineers anywhere between 3-6 months. However, at EchoJobs, we’re striving to shorten this duration by finding the best, newest jobs for you, so you can do less job searching, and more applying.
  • We’d recommend checking EchoJobs daily, as we add new jobs to the site each day. Additionally, if you got a chance to read our previous email on “what makes EchoJobs different from any other job search tools,” we also recommended that you set a job alert based on your job filters, so if you get emails on those new jobs, you could be checking more than once per day.
  • If you decide to continue with us after the 1-month trial, we definitely recommend this, as we all know it usually takes 3-6 months to find a quality job as a software engineer these days. So to best support you, we just adjusted our membership options at EchoJobs to monthly, 3 months, or 12 months (this option is more for passive job seekers looking a little bit for the future if they want to come back to work or make a job switch potentially. This lets you see what’s out there in case an even better fit job becomes available.)
  • EchoJobs is truly the only job site of its kind. We want to be THE spot for you to find the best job for you, and haven’t encountered any other company doing this. Other job sites are in niches besides software engineering or focus on a small portion of engineering jobs (like a specific coding language). In the words of Morgan, our founder, “I think what makes EchoJobs different is the amount of jobs, frequency that we add new jobs (we add 2,000-3,000 new jobs daily!), and the powerful search engines to find exactly the job you want more easily and efficiently. We can provide you with the most jobs that are vetted by us, we’ll continually find more new jobs for you, and we make it easier for you to apply and get hired.
