As a key member of the Qualcomm OneIT Cloud Team, the Cloud FinOps Engineer plays an important role in guiding the company through effective management and optimization of cloud costs. This position is dedicated to developing strategies that ensure cost transparency, optimize resource utilization, and promote a culture of cost awareness and efficiency across all cloud activities. Collaborating closely with IT, Finance, and Business Units, you will work to align cloud spending with the company's strategic goals, implementing cost-saving practices and fostering an environment where cost-effective cloud architecture is a standard part of the development lifecycle.
In this role, the Cloud FinOps Engineer will blend expertise in cloud engineering with a deep understanding of financial operations related to cloud services. This involves engaging in continuous education and research on the latest in cloud financial management practices and tools, ensuring the company stays at the forefront of cost-efficient cloud usage.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Management and Optimization: Monitor, analyze, and optimize cloud expenses continuously to ensure maximum efficiency and savings. Utilize advanced cost management tools to identify and implement cost-saving measures.
- Cost-Aware Architecture Practices: Champion the integration of cost optimization practices into the development lifecycle, advising developers on selecting cost-effective resources for testing and development phases.
- Budgeting and Forecasting: Develop and manage budget controls and forecasting models to proactively predict and manage cloud spending. Collaborate with finance to ensure cloud budgets are accurate and adhered to.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as a liaison between IT, finance, and business units to ensure cloud spending aligns with business objectives. Facilitate open communication and understanding between technical and non-technical stakeholders regarding cloud costs.
- Reporting and Accountability: Create and manage dashboards and scorecards that provide real-time visibility into cloud spending. Develop reports that support strategic decision-making and demonstrate accountability for cloud financial operations.
- Tooling and Automation: Develop and support tooling to automate the financial management of cloud resources. Implement policies and automations that support cost optimization and governance.
- Security and Compliance: Partner with IT security to ensure cost optimization efforts are compliant with security best practices and regulations.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in a systems engineer, developer, or solutions architect role with a focus on cloud financial management and optimization.
- Strong understanding of cloud pricing models and services across major public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
- Proficiency in programming languages relevant to cloud automation and cost management tools (Python and Javascript preferred).
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) templates and tools for efficient cloud resource management.
- Demonstrated ability to develop financial models and budgets for cloud services.
- Experience with cloud cost management tools like CloudHealth, Cloudability, or Cost Explorer.
- Strong analytical, technical writing, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- 5+ years of experience with public cloud platforms.
- 2+ cloud certifications, with a preference for certifications in cloud financial management or architecture
