Corporate Overview

Proofpoint is a leading cybersecurity company protecting organizations’ greatest assets and biggest risks: vulnerabilities in people. With an integrated suite of cloud-based solutions, Proofpoint helps companies around the world stop targeted threats, safeguard their data, and make their users more resilient against cyber-attacks. Leading organizations of all sizes, including more than half of the Fortune 1000, rely on Proofpoint for people-centric security and compliance solutions mitigating their most critical risks across email, the cloud, social media, and the web. We are singularly devoted to helping our customers protect their greatest assets and biggest security risk: their people. That’s why we’re a leader in next-generation cybersecurity. Protection Starts with People.

The Role

The staff s/w engineers in the tool & data science group are responsible for creating, extending and supporting tools for analyzing and presenting a large and disparate set of real-world data to determine what types of threats are affecting our customers.

This job is an opportunity to create mechanisms to better understand how the people that we’re responsible for protecting are being targeted by bad actors across the globe.   With your help, we can advance our state-of-the-art protection mechanisms and keep ahead of an ever-changing threat landscape.

Staff engineers are expected to lead technical group discussions, and to be able to mentor / develop younger engineers.

You will have the opportunity to see directly how the tools you contribute to enable Proofpoint to find, identify, and remediate new threats in the cybersecurity landscape globally.

Your day-to-day

As a staff engineer, you will work with internal users such as threat analysts, other developers and data scientists to create new tools and extend existing tools which mine data in a variety of formats and network locations to present useful information.

We work with a wide variety of internal users, and this job is hands-on.   So one day you’ll be meeting with a senior threat intelligence researcher to better understand what we need to build in order to better meet those needs.  The next day, you might be writing and releasing code to make some part of our data newly visible to threat analysts.

As you do your work, you’ll have access to the full range of tools that Amazon and other public cloud providers are creating to rapidly analyze and visualize terabytes of complex threat metadata.

You will be expected to own entire projects and applications. Helping to support, optimize, and design for new features, while helping to ensure documentation, monitoring, alerting, and knowledge transfers to the rest of the team.

What you bring to the team

Three over-arching requirements:

  • An inquisitive mind with the ability to learn where the data exists in a large and disparate system and what that data means
  • The ability to create reliable, tested tools that programmatically turn data into usable information
  • The desire and willingness to teach and mentor other developers

Qualifications should include many/most of the following:

  • BSCS or greater in relevant technical field with 7 years of experience , or 9+ years experience in a similar role
  • 5+ years with writing Javascript code for applications running in a public cloud environment
  • Recent hands-on experience with working with Javascript / Typescript / React.  We have other engineers who can help frame out front-ends, but you may still be involved in creating or extending front-ends for your services.
  • Recent hands-on experience with at least one NoSQL database (e.g. MongoDB, ElasticSearch) required
  • Recent hands-on experience with relational databases and SQL (MariaDB, MySQL, etc.) required
  • Recent hands-on experience with AWS serverless computing (including SQS/Lambda pipelines and  Glue/Spark) not required but very helpful
  • Willingness and ability to create and extend test frameworks around the code you write to prevent regressions and identify design flaws
  • Jest / Mocha / Cypress / Puppeteer/ etc
  • Comfortability working from CLI tools in UNIX / LINUX environment

Nice to have:

  • Experience with event driven batch workflows and schedulers (Apache Airflow)
  • Experience with containers (docker, eks, etc)
  • Experience with SSO protocols (saml2, oauth)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We prioritize job seekers as our customers, unlike bigger job sites, by charging a small fee to provide them with curated access to the best companies and up-to-date jobs. This focus allows us to deliver a more personalized and effective job search experience.
  • Salaries for the engineering jobs on our site range from $100K-$200K. On average, senior engineer positions on our EchoJobs are about $160K.
  • The EchoJobs positions have been sourced and vetted from the top companies to work for in the US as a software engineer, including LinkedIn and other reputable job sites. We also have syndicated jobs from companies that have just raised funding, as well as those that have great unique products and culture. From all of these sources, our founder, Morgan, has also resourced the company's authenticity in terms of their website, public appearance, and more.
  • Yes, our users asked us for just this, so now our search filters allow you to search for your top jobs via location, as well as by onsite, remote, or both. Approximately 30% of our jobs are remote, so you’ve got the best options for you!
  • We have not yet implemented this option, but are considering doing so in the future. For the moment, you would need to cancel your subscription, and resubscribe when you wanted to come back.
  • We add new jobs to EchoJobs every day! We scan our sources for the newest jobs, verify them, and post them to EchoJobs within minutes. We add about 2,000-3,000 new jobs for you each day!
  • From starting your job search to getting hired, the entire job search process can take us software engineers anywhere between 3-6 months. However, at EchoJobs, we’re striving to shorten this duration by finding the best, newest jobs for you, so you can do less job searching, and more applying.
  • We’d recommend checking EchoJobs daily, as we add new jobs to the site each day. Additionally, if you got a chance to read our previous email on “what makes EchoJobs different from any other job search tools,” we also recommended that you set a job alert based on your job filters, so if you get emails on those new jobs, you could be checking more than once per day.
  • If you decide to continue with us after the 1-month trial, we definitely recommend this, as we all know it usually takes 3-6 months to find a quality job as a software engineer these days. So to best support you, we just adjusted our membership options at EchoJobs to monthly, 3 months, or 12 months (this option is more for passive job seekers looking a little bit for the future if they want to come back to work or make a job switch potentially. This lets you see what’s out there in case an even better fit job becomes available.)
  • EchoJobs is truly the only job site of its kind. We want to be THE spot for you to find the best job for you, and haven’t encountered any other company doing this. Other job sites are in niches besides software engineering or focus on a small portion of engineering jobs (like a specific coding language). In the words of Morgan, our founder, “I think what makes EchoJobs different is the amount of jobs, frequency that we add new jobs (we add 2,000-3,000 new jobs daily!), and the powerful search engines to find exactly the job you want more easily and efficiently. We can provide you with the most jobs that are vetted by us, we’ll continually find more new jobs for you, and we make it easier for you to apply and get hired.
