Staff Mechanical Engineer
Team: R&D
Location: San Jose, CA
Commitment: Full-Time
Workplace Type: onsite
The Opportunity That Awaits You:
Build the hardware that surgeons trust with their patients!
We are developing next-generation robotic surgical systems that enable safer, more precise procedures and better outcomes for patients suffering from BPH.
We’re looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the architecture and design of complex electro-mechanical subsystems — precision mechanisms, motion systems, and capital equipment used directly in the operating room.
This is not a CAD-only role.
You will function as a technical owner and system architect, driving decisions that shape the product and mentoring engineers across the team.
If you enjoy solving deep mechanical problems, working shoulder-to-shoulder with EE/Systems/Clinical teams, and shipping hardware that truly matters, you’ll feel at home here.
What Your Day-To-Day Will Involve:
- Design, develop, and verify mechanical engineering solutions for Capital equipment working both hands-on and collaboratively including architecture direction, design and procurement of components, prototype assembly and builds, and design and development of testing and assembly fixtures and methods.
- Work in a small, cross-functional team to define and develop technical specifications for robotic systems and subsystems
- Lead workstreams for capital equipment or subsystem within the ME team or cross functionally,
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (software, electrical, systems, manufacturing) on the design of capital equipment systems and subsystems
- Contribute to and make decisions based on risk assessments, industry standards, and regulatory frameworks
- Perform technical design reviews to solicit feedback on design progress
- Create and maintain SolidWorks CAD databases, including assemblies, components, and detailed drawings
- Identifies and resolves technical issues to ensure feasibility and sustainability of mechanical designs. Contributes to the design for manufacturing analysis
- Support prototype clinical devices in the field
- Maintain trained status for, and comply with, all relevant aspects of the PROCEPT BioRobotics Quality Management System to ensure product and support regulatory compliance
- Understand and adhere to the PROCEPT BioRobotics Quality and EHS policies
The Qualifications We Need You to Possess
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (required); M.S. preferred.
- 8+ years of experience in designing capital medical equipment or robotic electro-mechanical systems.
- Proven expertise across all phases of the product development lifecycle—from concept to design transfer and manufacturing.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, including modeling of complex mechanisms and assemblies.
- Strong prototyping and iterative design skills, with hands-on experience building and testing mechanical systems.
- Deep knowledge of manufacturing processes such as injection molding, machining, sheet metal forming, and rapid prototyping.
- Demonstrated ability to design for manufacturability, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
- Experience managing outsourced development programs and setting technical criteria for vendor deliverables.
- Skilled in mechanical analysis including statics, dynamics, kinematics, and stress analysis.
- Advanced proficiency in tolerance stack-up analysis for low- to mid-volume production environments.
- Familiarity with IEC 60601 standards and thermal design for complex integrated systems.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a proven ability to work cross-functionally and drive consensus, and present to executive leadership.
- Deep understanding of medical device regulations, design controls, risk management, and quality systems (e.g., ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR Part 820).
- Proven track record of delivering Class II/III medical devices from concept through commercialization.
- Travel up to 10% of the time, internationally and domestic
The Qualifications We Would Like You to Possess
- Prior experience with robotic surgery systems, endoscopic devices, or advanced instrumentation.
- Familiarity with usability engineering and human factors design.
- Direct experience working with surgeons and clinical teams to capture product feedback in an operating room setting.
- Hands-on, collaborative, and solutions-oriented approach.
