About this role
Most engineers work within a system. You'll be the system.
As Principal Software Engineer, ePrescribing, you own the architecture, reliability, and evolution of Prescryptive's ePrescribing platform — the technical backbone that ensures prescriptions move accurately, securely, and at scale across a complex healthcare ecosystem.
You're not a passenger in this domain. You're the authority. If you live and breathe NCPDP ePrescribing, thrive on the gnarly interoperability challenges that make most engineers tap out, and want your technical decisions to have real downstream impact on patients and providers — this is the role built for you.
You'll operate with the autonomy of a principal IC and the influence of a domain owner: defining the problems worth solving, architecting the solutions, and setting the direction as standards, partners, and products evolve.
Key Accountabilities
- Domain Ownership: Set technical direction and own system health for ePrescribing across the platform
- Architecture & Scale: Design systems that support interoperability, multi-version standards, and growth across customers and partners
- Standards Strategy: Lead adoption and evolution of NCPDP standards, including version transitions and long-term compatibility
- Production Leadership: Establish patterns for rapid diagnosis and resolution of issues in live environments
- Cross-Functional Influence: Drive alignment across Engineering, Operations, Customer Care, and external partners
Primary Responsibilities
- Define and evolve the architecture for ePrescribing systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and interoperability
- Lead implementation of NCPDP SCRIPT standards, including multi-version support and translation services (e.g., 2017 ↔ 2023)
- Design and optimize XML-based message processing, including schema strategy, transformation, and validation
- Establish patterns and tooling for certification, validation, and onboarding of new partners and message types
- Own complex production issues end-to-end, setting the standard for real-time troubleshooting and resolution
- Partner with Operations and Customer Care to improve system transparency and reduce issue resolution time
- Integrate with external networks (e.g., Surescripts, Change Healthcare) and ensure resilient partner connectivity
- Identify and address systemic gaps, reducing single points of failure and improving long-term maintainability
- Mentor engineers and elevate team capability in healthcare interoperability and system design
Required skills, abilities, and education
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field
- Deep, hands-on expertise in NCPDP ePrescribing (SCRIPT) standards
- Proven track record designing and operating distributed, message-driven systems
- Strong command of XML and schema-driven integrations
- Experience owning end-to-end ePrescribing workflows and interoperability across systems
- Background working with:
- EHR/EMR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner)
- Pharmacy Management Systems (PMS)
- Retail and/or long-term care pharmacy workflows
- Familiarity with ePrescribing networks/intermediaries (e.g., Surescripts, Change Healthcare)
- Demonstrated ability to operate in high-urgency, production-driven environments
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Must have permission to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis
Preferred skills, abilities, and education
- Experience designing multi-version interoperability and translation layers
- Exposure to long-term care workflows
- Experience in regulated healthcare environments
- Track record of leading system evolution in scaling or early-stage environments
What we have to offer
- The opportunity to grow alongside an early-stage company shaking up a big, old-fashioned industry
- Flexible time off, including 12 paid holidays
- 401k match plus 100% employer paid medical, dental, and vision premiums
- Company contribution to Health Savings Account
- Stock options
