Software Engineer - Mobile

Over the past 7 years, our goal has been to support students across the UK & Europe to access quality books. We've just closed a $20M funding round, to continue our current ambitions of 1) expanding our support to students globally, specifically looking at the US and 2) building a product that goes beyond the book, a platform that helps students study smarter and more effectively.

What we’re looking for

A Software Engineer with experience in Typescript, React (Native), and Node.js. Although your primary responsibility will be working on the mobile app, you will work together with the rest of the full stack team to support the entire reader domain, across platforms. This means you either already have experience in web development, or enjoy learning it. You'll be joining our Learning tribe, working in the Reader squad with a mission to enhance the learning experience in both the mobile app as well as the web reader.

How we work together

We organise ourselves into cross-functional squads, with each squad working together on a common goal. This role will be a part of our Reader squad consisting of an Engineering Manger, Software Engineers, QA Engineer & Product Manager. We use the concept of fluid teams to make sure each team has the right skills available, as well as provide team members with opportunities for career progression.

What you’ll do

• You will work in a self-organising team in our product ecosystem providing technical development skills (React Native/React/Node/AWS) within the squad, co-solutioning and getting hands-on implementing the solutions to help your squad achieve it's goal.
• You will be developing and maintaining in-depth technical knowledge of our reader domain, particularly around dealing with rendering of ePubs and PDFs, read aloud, and learning-enhancing tools like notes and highlights, both in a web and mobile application environment.
• You will contribute to the design and code base of distributed AWS cloud systems, Serverless Node.js application back-ends, React Native mobile apps, and React web application front-ends.
• Within your squad you'll bring these solutions to life, writing high-quality code utilising test-driven development (Jest/Detox/Cypress), continuous integration (AWS/Github/Bitrise) and code review (GitHub).
• Partner with other engineering teams, product managers, and designers to align on requirements and deliver high-quality features that enhance our learning and researching experience.
• You and your cross-functional squad will look after application features from inception to production working with customers and business stakeholders to bring them to life and support them in production.
• You will be contributing to our mobile release strategy, as well as be responsible for mobile app releases together with your squad, making sure the release has been tested, release notes are written and translated, and ensuring we are proud of every release we do.

It’s the perfect role for you if you have experience with the following:

• Experience in implementing and deploying mobile applications using Typescript & React Native, and have experience with accessibility features.
• Experience with or interest in implementing web applications using Typescript, React, Node.js, and HTML & CSS.
• Experience working in an Agile environment with CI/CD.

• Experience in a startup environment
• Commercial experience as a mobile engineer
• Experience with native mobile languages (Swift / Objective-C / Java)
• Experience working with Cloud computing providers (AWS).
• Have a general interest in books, reading and always learning new things!
