What you need to know about the role- The Reliability Group Technical Lead will help to ensure our systems are working correctly by driving architectural decisions for fault tolerant systems. You will ensure that strategies are in place to keep performance within our standards as volume and load increases by influencing team designs. Meet our team We are the Reliability team. The core funding team builds product increments for our merchants to ensure daily payments are disbursed within target SLAs. The Reliability team has 2 sub teams, split between Platform and Scalability. The Platform team is responsible for Platform technology support and upgrades and migration of the application to the cloud. The Scalability team concentrates on our long term data strategy to ensure we can scale with volume, moving our database to the cloud, and ensure we enhance the applications in areas where we see performance improvements needed.

Your way to impact

You are critical to ensure our merchant receives their daily disbursement payment by aggregating daily payments from consumers and reconciling them from our banking partners.  You will work with core funding and reliability teams technical leads to ensure architecture and design decisions are scalable, helping to educate and adopt standards to ensure we can handle growing volume.  You will work with core team members to identify areas to performance that will need enhancements to scale with our large enterprise customers such as Uber, AirBnB, iFood.

Your day to day

GTL has “T-shaped” responsibilities. Deeply accountable for architectural decisions and technical integration with the rest of the organization. Specifics include:

  • Understand the business and be a bridge for stakeholders driving a resolution
  • Ownership of production stability, performance and scalability
  • Help ensure high standard for deploys, monitoring, system performance and on-call support documentation
  • Assist with ensuring efficient cross-team (including cross-organization) technical collaboration as it relates to large initiatives
  • Understand the business strategy and help translate business requirements into technical deliverables
    • In some cases, you may help define the business requirements themselves
  • Forward thinking vision across the problem domain
    • Anticipate potential pitfalls/problems and ensure it gets visibility across right stakeholders and addressed in timely manner.
  • Hands on technical guidance in design, development, delivery including incident resolution.
    • Write code for important spikes which drive key architectural decisions
  • Review PRs as needed
    • In support of initiatives you’re guiding
    • In domain areas where you have context, regardless of your involvement in that work
  • Set and Steer architecture direction
    • Attend, participate and evangelize the BT architecture forum
    • Work with EM/PM/TL and anchors to define high level architecture approach for an initiative (TL can take the initiative to do this but GTL should actively participate and drive this, if TL needs help); seek feedback from BT architecture forum, ensure TLs and others in your group do the same.
    • Responsible for overall technical direction
    • Ensure future projects align to technical vision
    • Help choose the right technologies and keep pushing the architecture forward
  • Engineering Practices
    • Lead by example with strong engineering practices
    • Coach TLs to adhere to practices
    • Help team(s) define practices
    • Identify practices that are being applied inappropriately and discuss alternatives
  • Should be ready to have multiple strategic trade-off conversations across the group
  • Provide flex-in support to help alleviate technical discovery capacity concerns for large initiatives
  • Be available for when a TL is on leave or fill in some organization needs (attrition).
    • Avoid becoming an owner or a single point of failure.
    • Be mindful that heroics aren’t sustainable.
  • Provide support and leadership as needed for managing recovery from production incidents and issues
  • Mentoring and Development
    • Consciously mentor the next level of tech leadership
    • Bi-weekly or monthly 1 on 1 with TL (and Senior engineers, if you and/or their manager identifies them as having good potential to step up)
    • Guide them on technical growth (and non-technical skills where appropriate)
    • Advocate on their behalf, partnering with EM/PM/GEM
  • Present information effectively, drive a group to a decision, give good feedback, run effective meetings
  • Backstop the teams as needed. For example:
    • Assist in PR review
    • Be available to provide guidance
    • Identify – and help escalate/solve – issues facing teams and developers
