Research Engineer / Scientist, Model Behavior

About the Team

Our team defines the core behavior of models using alignment methods such as RLHF / RLAIF to reflect fundamental values and improve creative intelligence. We leverage this work to develop innovative human-AI interfaces / interaction paradigms in a tight collaboration with product design and engineering teams. Our team produces artifacts, impacting millions of users. 

About the Role

We are looking for a research engineer / scientist, who is interested in the above research areas. You will develop the most challenging evaluations and novel methods to train models, improving their creative intelligence and creating the next generation of human-AI interfaces.  This role will include working on  creative breakthroughs, designing evaluations, ensuring data quality, executing careful scientific experiments, and more.

Ideal candidates should have a strong technical background, familiarity with the quickly emerging LLM stack, and experience in an applied Machine Learning setting. Previous experience in a creative field or previous product experience (e.g. design engineering, rapid prototyping) is a plus. 

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

• Design challenging evaluations related to creative intelligence 

• Develop scalable synthetic data  techniques 

• Train models and run experiments to study data quality  

• Iterate on research experiments, clearly communicating insights to the team 

• Integrate core model behaviors into models that power ChatGPT 

• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering to bring conceptual prototypes from the research phase into production

• Are capable of leading ambitious projects, and have clear communication skills.

• Have familiarity with designing quality research experiments & evaluations with rapid iterations    

• Have familiarity with Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Large Language Models and related infrastructure (e.g. PyTorch) 

• Have familiarity with frontend technologies like React / Typescript/ JS.

• Have experience working in complex technical environments and/or improving research velocity 

• Bonus: have experience with 1 or more large scale data systems such as beam or spark.

• Bonus: have experience in design engineering, you are autonomous and can rapidly prototype many ideas at a high quality bar in a short amount of time  

• Bonus: have worked on novel interfaces, gestures, animations, spatial/canvas ui, rendering performance.
