Research Engineer / Research Scientist, Post-Training, Frontier Product Research

About the Role

We are looking for a research engineer / scientist. You will develop the most challenging evaluations, construct new RL environments and train models, come up with novel methods for reward modeling, improve models core capabilities in coding / writing and shaping the next gen. product paradigms. This role will include working on creative breakthroughs, crafting model behavior, designing evaluations and training procedures, executing careful scientific experiments, developing synthetic tasks in RL, deploying models, and more. Example released projects: ChatGPT tasks, ChatGPT canvas, SearchGPT, streaming summarized o1 chain-of-thoughts. 

Ideal candidates should have a strong technical background, familiarity with the quickly emerging LLM stack, and experience in an applied Machine Learning setting. Previous experience in a creative or product experience (e.g. design engineering, rapid prototyping) is a plus. 

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

• Train SOTA models and improve core capabilities like coding and creative reasoning

• Design challenging evaluations for novel capabilities, construct RL environments   

• Develop scalable synthetic data techniques in RL and study them 

• Train models and run scientific experiments 

• Iterate on research experiments, clearly communicating insights to the team 

• Integrate core behaviors into the next gen frontier models (e.g. o-series) 

• Co-creating novel product surfaces and interaction paradigms  

• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering to bring conceptual prototypes from the research phase into production

• Are capable of leading ambitious projects, and have clear communication skills.

• Have familiarity with designing quality research experiments & evaluations with rapid iterations    

• Have familiarity with Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Large Language Models and related infrastructure (e.g. PyTorch) 

• Have familiarity in working in complex technical environments and/or improving research velocity 

• Bonus: have experience with 1 or more large scale data systems such as beam or spark.

• Bonus: have experience in design engineering, you are autonomous and can rapidly prototype many ideas at a high quality bar in a short amount of time
