Job Description

Company Description
Nine is Australia’s largest locally owned media company. We are home to premium, trusted news, sport and entertainment. Nine's assets span free-to-air television, free and paid streaming, publishing and digital audio, and digital outdoor and retail media. Our content reaches almost every Australian - meaning what we do has real impact. We bring people together, celebrate the big moments, and capture the everyday ones. As our iconic and emerging brands continue to evolve, we offer unique opportunities for you to bring fresh ideas, innovate, and make your mark on the future of Australian media.

Job Description

As the Technology Director for the Consumer Platform, you will be the single-threaded owner of the technical vision, strategy, and execution for one of the most critical transformation programs at Nine. You will lead the acceleration of our integrated Consumer Platform, consolidating disparate technologies from our Streaming and Publishing businesses to create a unified foundation for audience Identity, MarTech, Subscriptions, Payments, Billing, and Customer Support.

This role requires an exceptional leader who can navigate complex technical and business domains, de-risk a high-stakes delivery program, and inspire a large, multi-disciplinary organisation of 50-75+ engineers (including onshore, offshore, and vendor teams). You will be accountable for delivering the foundational platform that underpins Nine's future digital revenue growth ambitions.

What you’ll do:

Strategic & Technical Leadership

  • Technical Strategy & Vision: In partnership with the Product Director, define and own the long-term technical vision for the Consumer Platform across Identity, Accounts, Subscriptions, Billing, Payments, and MarTech.
  • Architecture & Vendor Management: Lead technical discovery, architectural direction, and vendor management processes to establish modern consolidated Identity, Subscription, and Billing stacks.
  • Legacy Modernisation: Champion the strategic sunsetting of legacy systems, guiding a smooth transition while maintaining system security, compliance, and core business continuity.
  • Engineering Innovation: Accelerate platform maturity through modern engineering practices, AI integration, and flexible global resourcing models.

Delivery & Program Execution

  • Engineering Management: Direct the Consumer Platform engineering organisation across core domains (Accounts & Engagement, Commerce, Platform Growth, and Delivery).
  • High-Impact Execution: Own the delivery roadmap to drive continuous value, ensuring the platform meets key business milestones and major commercial launch targets.
  • Capital & Capability Management: Oversee a multi-year enterprise budget, ensuring capital efficiency, rigorous program de-risking, and optimal resource allocation across onshore and offshore partner teams.

Stakeholder & Vendor Management

  • Executive Collaboration: Serve as the primary technology lead alongside Product leadership, providing transparent reporting on progress, dependencies, and risk mitigation to Executive Leadership and the Board.
  • Vendor & Partner Governance: Lead enterprise relationships with strategic software vendors and implementation partners, holding third parties accountable to delivery quality and SLAs.

What You’ll Bring

  • Senior Executive Leadership: 15+ years of technology leadership experience with a proven track record of delivering large-scale, complex digital transformation programs in high-traffic, consumer-facing environments.
  • Large-Scale Engineering Management: Demonstrated experience leading and inspiring multi-disciplinary engineering organisations, including onshore, offshore, and third-party vendor teams.
  • Strategic & Commercial Acumen: Proven ability to translate high-level business goals into actionable technical strategies, architecture roadmaps, and execution plans.
  • Vendor & Ecosystem Management: Deep experience evaluating, selecting (RFP), and managing enterprise technology partners across critical capabilities (e.g., CIAM, Subscription Billing, Payment Systems).
  • Financial Rigor: Strong budget management and financial governance capability, with experience overseeing multi-million-dollar program allocations.
  • Boardroom to Engineering Influence: Exceptional communication and executive presence, capable of influencing, translating, and aligning stakeholders from hands-on engineers up to C-level executives and the Board.
  • Industry Background: Experience within media, streaming (SVOD/BVOD), or publishing environments is highly desirable.
