Job Description

NBC News is seeking a Full Stack Developer to join its Innovation team, building the core applications that power next-generation production, automation, and AI-driven storytelling across News. This role emphasizes end-to-end software engineering, from architecture and APIs to front-end delivery and real-time broadcast graphics, serving live and data-intensive workflows that support content creation at scale.

The role spans real-time broadcast graphics, data synchronization across platforms, and applied AI. You will help solve creative production problems for artworks and graphics teams, and build and design systems that streamline newsroom and artworks workflows, carrying ideas from rapid prototype to supported, operational systems.

Responsibilities

Application and Systems Development

  • Architect, build, and deploy full stack applications supporting live production and content workflows.
  • Partner with Newsroom, product and creative teams to understand production pain points, and design systems that solve newsroom and creative production workflow problems.
  • Build self-service tools that automate repetitive creative production tasks, such as templated graphics generation, at scale.
  • Deliver modular, scalable, and high-availability systems integrating editorial and technical platforms.
  • Develop APIs, orchestration logic, and middleware connecting front-end interfaces to enterprise systems.
  • Design serverless and event-driven services that generate rendered assets and templated graphics on demand.

Real-Time Broadcast Graphics

  • Build responsive HTML-based broadcast graphics as reusable components for live television and streaming output.
  • Integrate graphics templates with real-time rendering engines and drive multiple output streams from a single control source.
  • Develop control applications that let editorial and production teams assemble shows and drive data-driven graphics.
  • Contribute to repeatable, standards-based graphics products that scale across news and elections programming.

Data Integration and Automation

  • Design and implement data pipelines for real-time and scheduled ingestion (financial, editorial, election).
  • Normalize, transform, and synchronize data across broadcast, streaming, and digital platforms.
  • Integrate with internal and third-party APIs to unify access to content and operational datasets.
  • Build integrations across REST, GraphQL, and WebSockets, passing information between systems in real time to keep content and operational data in sync.
  • Power data-driven templates with managed sync services so live graphics stay in sync with source data.

AI Integration

  • Partner with AI research teams and technology vendors to prototype and deploy frontier AI capabilities.
  • Operationalize generative and multimodal models that enhance creative workflows and production efficiency.
  • Deploy pre-trained ML models in production pipelines, for example automated image processing.
  • Build agentic workflows that let AI assist or drive control room operations.
  • Embed AI-driven automation into existing editorial, graphics, and control applications.

Application Engineering

  • Develop intuitive, performant front-end interfaces using React, Vue, or Angular, including shared internal component libraries.
  • Build reliable back-end systems in Node.js, Python, or Java, using modern API and data standards.
  • Implement real-time streaming architectures and event-driven design for live and asynchronous operations.

Collaboration and Innovation

  • Work closely with editorial, design, and engineering teams to deliver cross-platform production tools.
  • Communicate clearly with stakeholders of all technical levels, translating between editorial needs and engineering realities.
  • Lead rapid prototyping cycles exploring new technologies and creative workflows.
  • Drive operationalization of successful prototypes into robust, supported production systems.

Core Competencies

  • Technical Depth: Advanced full stack engineering and system architecture expertise.
  • Innovation Mindset: Ability to identify, test, and scale emerging technologies.
  • Execution Under Pressure: Delivery of stable, performant systems for live operations.
  • Collaboration: Effective communication and partnership across creative and technical disciplines.
  • Storytelling Orientation: Focus on enabling technology that amplifies editorial and creative impact.

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of experience delivering enterprise-scale full stack applications.
    • Advanced skills in front-end frameworks (React, Angular, Vue) and back-end development (Node.js, Python, Java). Dotnet C# a bonus.
    • Strong knowledge of API design (REST and GraphQL), streaming data systems, and cloud architectures.
    • Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP, including serverless patterns and containerized deployment using Docker and Kubernetes.
    • Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks and experience integrating model-based systems into production workflows.

    Additional Requirements:

    • Hybrid: This position currently has a hybrid schedule, which requires contributing from the office a minimum of four days per week. The Company reserves the right to change in-office requirements at any time.
