Navarro Research and Engineering is recruiting an Electrical Principal Design Engineer #4000 (3848) in Greenville, SC.

Provide the essential administrative processes, technical knowledge, and leadership required to support complex electrical engineering projects. This position has oversight of a specific project area and acts as a representative of the electrical engineering discipline, ensuring technical accuracy across all phases of project execution. This is a lead-level role performing engineering assignments of advanced complexity.

 

Under general supervision of the Discipline Lead Engineer, the Electrical Principal Design Engineer serves as a Supervising Lead, providing technical direction, mentorship, and oversight to engineers and designers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyze and make independent recommendations regarding technical solutions to problems of advanced complexity in accordance with project requirements.
  • Develop and review electrical specifications and design criteria.
  • Perform and check complex engineering analyses and calculations; specify materials, equipment, and systems; and resolve advanced technical issues.
  • Coordinate technical issues with other disciplines, project management, vendors, and clients.
  • Execute work in compliance with the Project Quality Plan, procedures, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Ensure work is executed in accordance with approved project scope, cost, and schedule baselines.
  • Develop and review estimates, schedules, and progress reports, including effort-hour estimating and staff forecasting.
  • Establish, control, and report on material key quantities; provide analysis and forecasts.
  • Provide technical support to procurement and subcontracting activities, including scope development, technical bid evaluations, and review of vendor submittals.
  • Support construction administration activities, including responses to requests for information (RFIs) and evaluation of field changes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Discipline-Specific Responsibilities

  • Interpret and apply national, state, and local electrical codes and standards, DOE orders, and customer design requirements.
  • Prepare and review electrical design and construction documents, specifications, and system descriptions through all project phases.
  • Prepare and modify electrical design drawings, including single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, raceway layouts, lighting plans, and grounding systems.
  • Perform complex electrical system studies, including short circuit, load flow, stability, motor starting, harmonics, relay coordination, and ground grid analysis.
  • Develop complex area classifications and electrical design documentation.
  • Perform detailed electrical calculations such as voltage drop, cable de-rating, relay coordination, cable pulling tensions, and equipment sizing.
  • Prepare motor schematics and wiring diagrams.

Minimum Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical (Power) Engineering.
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of related electrical engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal (including Department of Energy), state, and local codes and standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical discipline codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with project management, coworkers, clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Proven ability to perform work in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a time-conscious, schedule-driven environment.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including proficiency with word processing, email, spreadsheets, and electronic presentation software.
  • Significant experience providing Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services on large industrial projects.
  • Proficiency executing EPC projects utilizing engineering analysis, 3D modeling, and 2D Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) tools in a multidiscipline environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience designing systems, structures, and components for nuclear facilities in accordance with ASME NQA-1 requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial availability and cost of electrical materials.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and leading large, complex projects.
  • Practical field experience supporting electrical design and construction.
  • EPC project experience supporting:
    • U.S. Department of Energy or other U.S. Federal Government agencies
    • Nuclear facilities operating under a nuclear quality assurance program
    • Manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology facilities
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical power systems and power system analysis software, such as SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL) and Electrical Transient Analysis Program (ETAP).
